Mornantau Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Which two players do you think have the potential to make the best opening pair for India for the next five yrs or so 1) SHikhar Dhawan 2) Vijay 3) Rohit Sharma (u nevr know he may also be tried in Testsif he do well in ODI) 4) Gautam 5) Lokesh Rahul 6) Jiwanjot Singh Any others u can suggest. I think Dhawan is fine but who could be the best partner for him ?
Scarves Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Dhawan is an obvious choice but Gambhir is a proven player. Vijay hasn't done much overseas to really cement a spot. I would pick Gambhir and Dhawan. Not sold on Vijay.

I am sure he will be retained in test matches as he scored some decent run against Aussies in India. Vijay will :fail:overseas. But at present first choice is dhawan and Vijay.

India cant afford to play newcomers especially in Test matches against Number one team, that too abroad. No Streak of optimism for upcoming talents like Jiwanjot or at least Lokesh Rahul ?

I am not really in favour of GG but he is experienced and his eyesight has not failed him yet unlike Viru. So he will be Dhawan's partner. Rohit himself told that introducing 2 new balls rule would make it tough for him. This indicates lack of confidence. Vijay would play some flashy innings of 30 or 40 runs and get out. We don't need that. Jiwanjot and Lokesh Rahul are too young to introduce in a difficult tour.

He is one who actually needs personal coach or a team coach who gives him personal attn. Not everyone is a Kohli who is self disciplined self starter and can manage their careers. I dont think we shud rule Vijay out before he's had a decent run, he may just blossom. Rahane is not a good technique player. Perhaps Zol shud be touring with the team not in 11, to give him some exposure and c if he is good enough to be drafted in early, remember the likes of Lara n Ganguly also got early chance. Is there a restriction on the size of squad for overseas tours ? As far as I know its normally 16 approx member sqaud which doesnt allow enough options for the captain in terms or trying out 3rd , 4th opner or even carrying extra fast bowlers in case somebody gets injured or underperforms. Opinions on that ?
G_B_ Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 The thing about Viru is that if he had kept his fitness up, he would still be playing. Viru has not been himself since 2011 WC. You get a feeling he thought that was it as far as achievements were concerned. Dhawan is much fitter as is more technically sound than Viru. Less dependent on hand eye cooridination. Mind you Dhawan does have quite an open stance and IMO he will go through phases. Phases of low scores and phases of good scores. Its how he handles the low score phase which is the thing that matters.
