I have both the novel and the movie. Do I read the novel or watch the movie first?
Watch first and read then. You would want to enjoy visual experience before knowing the story. I am not sure how true it is to the story. From what i read some changes have been made.

Kubrick in a conversation with Nicholson said "Jack, if you look at it, The Shining is an optimistic movie". Jack bamboozzled. "Yes, if anyone believes if there is anything out there, it has got to be optimistic". Kubrick for you

Whenever you have both the novel and the movie based on the novel, always read the novel first regardless of how good the movie is.

The movie is completely different from the novel. Stephen King distanced himself from Kubrick's adaptation of the Shining. You stand to gain nothing by reading the novel first and than watching the movie or vice versa. They are two different pieces of work in their own right.
