statsguru gives preference to No of innings, VK -> 86 inns ; 3863 runs Richards got to 4000,, in 88 innings, so yes VK needs to score 137 in one innings to break the records and in 2 innings to equal the record To break Ganguly's fastest Indian to 4000 record though... he needs 18 innings, shud be beaten comfortably.

The mind set in those days and mindset these days are so different.T20 and all other changes which have totally changed the ODI batting. And the mindset of bowlers on those days? were they really one day bowling specialists. Did any of them even take ODIs seriously in those days? The counter argument works both ways. ODI today is much more competitive than even 10 years ago.

King Viv Richards was class by himself especially in odis. Kohli is nowhere near him.

When Kohli has managed to do something which nobody could since 50 overs an innings odis became the norm, he becomes extremely special player, and when you make statements like "Kohli nowhere near him" it's not much of an argument. Somebody with 13 100s and averaging 52+ in odis is in an elite bracket at the very top tier and don't think any player, past or present, is heads & shoulders above Kohli to merit "nowhere near him" comment.

Because he isn't. Not yet. But he is showing huge potential and could be in some years. But one would like to see more of him abroad and against tougher bowlers. Banging SL in sub continent is great to some extent. And he has done well abroad in limited opportunities. But lets not jump the gun here.

I am not jumping the gun, nor am I saying Kohli is the best there ever was. But I do find statements like "Kohli is nowhere near XYZ" a bit OTT.
