putrevus Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 why should we consider steyn's one day record while discussing the ATG world test X1?brian lara and gavaskar would also miss out going by that Steyn is on par with bowlers in the team in tests but his odi stats are not on par with bowlers in the team so he misses out.
Sooda Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Im intrigued by how no one is picking two spinners even in an 5 man attack.
King Tendulkar Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 1 Sunny 2 Hayden 3 Tendulkar 4 Kallis 5 Sobers 6 Botham 7 Gilly 8 Dev 9 Hadlee 10 Imran 11 Warne How about this team. Why not utilise the great all rounders. All this 4 or 5 bowlers!! This has 7 proper ATG bowlers with still a great batting line up.
putrevus Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Greg struggled quite a bit against the Windies. He struggled against the short ball which they bowled a lot. No he did not struggle early in his career, it is only later in his career he struggled. There is no batsmen in world who did not struggle against those WI bowlers at some point in their careers. Sunil Gavaskar who is regarded as best player against WI in that era played the fast foursome of WI only in two series that too all of them were in space of 12 months once in WI he struggled mightily and in the return series @home he did well in patches. WI attack (once they got 4 fast bowlers in team) was just simply too good to be dominated by anyone, no one could dominate them they only survived.
Straight Drive Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 From those i have seen Cook Smith Sangakkara Sachin Lara Kallis Shaun Pollock Steyn Ajmal Muralitharan McGrath Reliable opener who scores big doubles and other having scored big tons when set. Also both show enough patience to see of the new ball and make it easy for the forthcoming batters having played most matches on relatively more bowler friendly wickets. Proven number 3 providing genuine wicketkeeping option. Nothing needs to be said about Sachin and Lara. Kallis the best allrounder of this era .Would have added Wasim instead of Pollock as swing bowler + decent batter had he not been named in Justice Malik Qayyum report  Two spinners (Ajmal and Murali) providing top class spin options in 5 specialist bowlers attack. Thought about having Warnie but dont want players in team who pass info to bookies .Steyn the best strike bowler even on batsmen friendly wickets.Wonder what his SR would be if he played on uncovered wickets. And McGrath . No fixers in my team :winky: http://static.espncricinfo.com/db/NATIONAL/PAK/NEWS/qayyumreport/qayyum_report.html
Scarves Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 NO Tendulkar:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Was waiting for someone to say that even though I gave my reasons. :winky:
King Tendulkar Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Was waiting for someone to say that even though I gave my reasons. :winky: Yes your explanation was superb. You said he is way better batsman then others but not as energetic in the field as ponting and border:hysterical:
Raghav_12 Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Yes your explanation was superb. You said he is way better batsman then others but not as energetic in the field as ponting and border:hysterical: he should have picked Raina then :giggle:
King Tendulkar Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 he should have picked Raina then :giggle::hysterical: Or Sir Jadeja as he could have bowled some handy overs as well:--D
adi B Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 I am a bit intrigued that very few are picking Hayden as an opener. He averaged 50.7 in 103 tests at a strike rate of 60. Scored 30 centuries with a highest of 380. Could play against both pace and spin. Not easy to ignore " Mat the Bat the Run Machine " as he was called in his early days as a cricketer. A devastating batsman and fierce competitor who played to win. His fast scoring ability would make him a perfect complement for Gavaskar and make it easy to win test matches. Plus he was a left handed power hitter. Boycott or Haynes opening with Sunny would make the opening very slow and not in keeping with modern cricket. hayden mostly struggled against good fast bowlers in seaming/swinging conditions especially in england, saf and nzl where he avgd less than 35 in more than 25 tests.. he was more of a HTB bit like jaya, avging around 58 at home and 41 away, even ganguly who is a middle order batsman avgd 41+ away
Scarves Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Yes your explanation was superb. You said he is way better batsman then others but not as energetic in the field as ponting and border:hysterical: There are reasons they put Tendulkar in places where the ball never goes. :hysterical:
Muloghonto Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 There are reasons they put Tendulkar in places where the ball never goes. :hysterical: Err Tendy may not be a slip great but he is an extremely safe pair of hands both in the deep and inside the circle. When was the last time you saw Tendy drop a catch ? And Border was utterly useless except for being a slip fielder and he too, isn't the best candidate. Viv, Lara, Warne are all significantly better slippers than Border ever was and many here pick Kallis too, who is a very safe slip catcher. So there, you have 3 slips automatic who are better than Border and Kallis in the mix. Since there is rarely a scenario in test cricket where more than 3 slips are deployed, Border is simply not good enough a batsman to be in this discussion. Tendy on the other hand, is the only batsman after Bradman to've averaged 40+ everywhere he's played. His name is the first one on the list.

Border is my captain which is why he is in the team. 3 slips are used a lot as well, you'll have first slip, second slip, third slip, gully and a point, so I don't know what you're on about because 3 slips are used a bloody lot. Tendulkar doesn't fit where I wanted him in a team. It isn't about stuffing the best players possible, it is for me about making a team I feel will work together and I posted my team and how they will work. Plus compared to the rest of them Tendulkar isn't a better fielder in terms of batsman and there is no way Gavaskar is not opening.
King Tendulkar Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 There are reasons they put Tendulkar in places where the ball never goes. :hysterical: Clearly you only watched him fielding in end of his carrer. In his pomp decent fielder
CommonMan Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 Dravid, Tendulkar is a must in any all time team.. PERIOD! From what I have seen Hayden Kallis Dravid Tendulkar S Waugh© Sangarkara(wk) Flintoff Warne Pollock/Murali Walsh McGrath

Scarves Posted December 3, 2013 Posted December 3, 2013 Clearly you only watched him fielding in end of his carrer. In his pomp decent fielder Tendulkar was never close to top or mid-top tier in fielding in the history of cricket. He was solid but that's it. This isn't about the best batsman otherwise I might as well have stocked up with the guys who has the most runs and average and said **** all to making a team.

U do not pick tests sides based with preference to fielding ability.Sachin was a good catcher and pretty solid allround the field.

Well was better fielder then Border and Sunny who are in your team. So your point is redunant and not consistently applied Also Mcgrtah and Ambrose were not exactly electric in field. Should have gone for anderson if wanted seamers who was good in field:giggle:
