Number Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 They were really unfortunate that they had to beat the greatest ODI side ever at its peak. Probably the best runner up team. Fast bowling was awesome specially in super six games. Fastest till date India had, all 3 bowlers bowling in 140s.

Trichromatic Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 2003 WC team was much better in terms of batting' date=' bowling and fielding. It was bad luck that 2003 WC Australian team was much better. If I remember correctly we only lost to Australia in that World Cup both in the league match and ofcourse the finals other than that we won against all other teams very dominantly.[/quote'] I doubt that 2003 team was better in batting. Indian team had just returned from horrible series against NZ where they struggled to score 150 on consistent basis. IIRC, we scored 200 only at Napier and lost that match also. Jocob Oram, Kyle Mills, Bond destroyed confidence of this team. Tuffey had figures of 2-11 in one match. However, it probably boosted confidence of Srinath (he bowled 3-13 in one match, I guess), Nehra and Zaheer. We struggled against Netherlands and horrible form of players was clearly visible there. Australia match just exposed that even more. We were lucky that Sachin was on different plane. Ganguly, Sehwag struggled for runs during entire tournament. Dravid and Yuvraj did good job and there was nothing much to say about Kaif/Mongia (he was probably only one to hit Murali for a six and took wicket of Afiridi, I guess). Overall we relied only on 3 batsmen and 2 of them were not even their best form. Even SL had similar situation with Arvinda, Atapattu and Sanath doing bulk of scoring. Sachin completely changed the strength of our batting. Apart from Sachin, biggest surprise was our fast bowling. By super sixes, our all three fast bowlers were among top 5-6 wicket takers? They had somewhere around 15-16 wickets and probably Vaas, Drakes were only ones to take those many? What's more - both Zaheer and Nehra were consistently bowling 140-145 at that time. Nehra did magic against England, Zaheer against NZ, Srinath against SL. All of them had their day. Bowling wise - 2003 was best team. I haven't seen better fast bowling performance from Indian bowlers in a tournament.
Trichromatic Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 speed guns are inconsistent Still they bowled with lot of fire and you don't speed guns to realize that Zak and Nehra were quick during those days especially Zak who was definitely quicker.

The start was so bad that nobody had any hope if this team would even go to the next round.:--D Even Netherland bundled India for 200 odd runs and that too with SRT scoring a fifty. When we lost to Aus next game badly there was a huge backlash with effigy burning and all. Ganguly was under stress, then Sachin came to press and appealed people to calm down and promised to not let anyone down. Just carried the batting till finals after that. :hatsoff:

Pagalpanti Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I find comparing teams across era as futile. India the ODI side was a distant 2nd team throughout the World cup in 2003.They were excellent against all other sides but totally got annihilated by Aus not once but twice. India in 2011 was clearly the favorites and they actually played like one and won it. Despite losing to SA, I think they were the best team throughout the tournament. 2011 for me.
Cricketics Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 It was a great team, but Dravid made it look better team by able to handle wicket keeping and make sure we could insert one extra batsman. I think 2011 was great. We had the greatest ever ODI batsman playing with greatest ever future Indian Cricketer - Kohli, with Gambhir and Sehwag on top and probably the best Indian ODI fast bowler ever Zaheer Khan in the line up. Well captained tournament by Dhoni. Ashwin bowling great. Probably one of the best finishers -Yuvraj, showing his class and stepping up every time including Raina. That to me was the team.
Zanjeer Posted December 28, 2013 Author Posted December 28, 2013 Vibhash;2704724]I doubt that 2003 team was better in batting. Jocob Oram, Kyle Mills, Bond destroyed confidence of this team. Tuffey had figures of 2-11 in one match. However, it probably boosted confidence of Srinath (he bowled 3-13 in one match, I guess), Nehra and Zaheer. Well, to be honest those were horrible pitches we played in NZ. The same NZ team was beaten black and blue by India in the wc. On that NZ tour sourav complained about the quality of NZ pitches and NZ captain Fleming said that the pitches were world class but Indian team weren't. he also said Indian team wouldn't qualify as NZ "c" side. Ganguly took it very personally and wanted to give a strong reply in the wc. We lost one match. Even in 2013 we lost to south Africa and tied a game with England. Yuvi and dravid did a Great job. kaif played a great part in the wc. Against Pakistan, he came @ no.4 and played some incredible shots against shoaib akthar. Everyone talks about how sachin played shoaib akthar but kaif made sure that we didn't lose a wicket till 160 I think. He played an excellent innings against NZ when we lost early wickets. I think that was the match McMillan was having a go at kaif and the umpire sticked a plaster on McMillan s mouth asking him to shut up. Lol ]Overall we relied only on 3 batsmen and 2 of them were not even their best form. Even SL had similar situation with Arvinda, Atapattu and Sanath doing bulk of scoring. I haven't seen better fast bowling performance from Indian bowlers in a tournament. yep, bowling was best in 2003 wc. In fact srinath announced retirement before the 2003 wc. It was sourav who visited srinath personally @ srinath's residence and forced him to come out of retirement to play the wc..:hatsoff: I would even put 2003 wc batting line up ahead of 2011. Two reasons, sachin 2011 wasn't as good as 2003 wc sachin. Sachin was unbelievable during the 2003 wc. We had too many choppings and changing in 2011 team. Players like Yusuf, Raina, ashwin, sreesanth, nehra, chawla were dropped and picked again and again. It never looked a settled team. But 2003 wc team had only one change with bhajji and kumble. If I had to pick one team I would pick 2003 wc team without any hesitation. If 2011 wc team had to play in south Africa, they would have lost it very badly in 2003. But 2003 wc team would have won the cup if the matches were played in India.
The Outsider Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 The 2003 Australian team would have beaten the blue sides out of the 2011 WC winning Indian team. They did the same in '03, so I would call it too close to call but prefer '03 for its pace attack.
putrevus Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I dont think that 2003 aussie team was unbeatable as it was made upto, 2011 team would have done fine against them.
special K Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 England 1992 team would have walloped the 2003 and 2011 Indian teams.
