But the blow to his political career would be immense if he can't win at a Hindutva stronghold like Banaras in an election which is supposed to be a cakewalk for BJP. It's not too different from Congress losing from Amethi, one of their strongholds.

It is about marketing themselves as an alternatives to the bigwigs by engaging in big ticket fights. If they do, it will be a death blow to the political aspirations of the defeated candidate. Modi's PM aspirations would be dealt a huge blow if he isn't even able to win a Hindutva stronghold. Same with RG in Amethi why would Modis PM aspirations deal a strong blow if he does not win Varanasi? His is still the PM candidate for the party. Secondly calling Varanasi a hindutva stronghold is not right. quite a few religions there. Hope Hindutva is not being used in the extreme sense here.

If people won't vote for congress MPs, a lot of candidates contesting from a BJP ticket this time after jumping ship wouldnt' get elected . :giggle:

But Modi wave is too strong to take away any votes by Nilekani.

With good vote share of educated folks, Nilekani would have attacked both of them. Also he could have talked about issues such as inflation which he cant do now. Btw does he speak Kannada at all ?
