Yes ganguly struggled in tests and that was the reason he was dropped as captain and form the team ,expect same with dhoni nothing more or less.Wicket keeper batsman in modern times have been teams best player like abdv even prior in few series.Pror was dropped even though he is averaging over 41. not necessary that WK should be any teams best batsmen.. dhoni is handling captaincy duties in addition to wk and batting.. see what cook is doing now and dont forget out very own goddy when he was the kaptaan

alexander Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 A team which hasn't won a single test in 15 years out of SC, few test wins and series draws are considered a step in the right direction. You can't become a world beater within a span of one tour. A team which has previously won in England, has challenged Aus/SA, has won in WI goes on to lose 2.5 days by innings, goes on to lose 8-0 without any intent, it is considered a step in the wrong direction. Hence Dhoni gets so much stick. This. India were a joke of a test team for a long, long time away from home. Ganguly gave them some wins, respectability. Back to normal, it seems. At least continue to bite until this summer is over. Another 4-0 would bring smiles to our faces. :two_thumbs_up:
Texan Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Dravid was our best overseas captain.bit under rated in that regard.handled fast bowlers very well :agree: The only time I felt Dravid was negative was in the series against Eng in Eng when we could have easily won 2-0, but settled for 1-0. But yes, among Dhoni, Ganguly and Dravid, IMO Dravid was the best captain. Too bad he got the captaincy pretty late.

Marut Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 India was a terrible touring team during the 90s - under Ganguly, he brought back some respectability to India as a touring nation - some wins, some hard draws etc. Dravid pushed the bar even higher because he was leveraging from Ganguly. Initially Dhoni held out but India as touring team under Dhoni went down dramatically and India became the butt of all test jokes in 2011-12. Can't see any other captain continuing his office after these gory defeats.

Did we improve under Ganguly overseas? 100% yes But was it reall down to him grooming fast bowlers as most here keep on insisting ? Clearly facts show that isnt the case. We improved greatly under Ganguly overseas becoz our batting improved greatly (4 Indian ATG bats) and Kumble started to perform exceptionally. Not much to do fast bowling. And we also continued to perform under Dhoni until (SA NZL) batting performed.And we returned to the pre Ganguly ways when they were on their last leg (Sachin Lax and Dravid).And to Dhoni's credit we have already built another strong batting lineup which may be even better than the previous one. So the crux is Dhoni or Ganguly our overseas performances has been based on the quality of our batsmen and Spinner.Our fast bowling has always struggled apart from when Dravid was captain.
