I don't play cricket for selfish reasons, says Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir needs a season in county cricket or could play a FC season in Australia or South Africa just to make a few adjustments to his technique which he wouldn't be able to in India. Just has to tighten his off side play(playing away from the body, poking at deliveries outside off) and balls directed at his rib cage and short deliveries. He proved himself in test cricket at the start of his career, so he has lots of talent and if he works hard enough, he will be back in the side. Still lots of potential left in him.
He had a stint at Essex

Uthappa or Uthappam? We need one solid opener and one dasher. I think Dhawan should still be given a chance, and perhaps Rahane should open.

Let Vijay and Dhawan enjoy a run before even considering Gambhir for nostalgic reasons. Besides if one of these guys have a string failures we have to explore all options . Not just Gambhir by default.

Utappam has avg of 34 as opener with strike rate of 104 ....Rahane has avg of 27 and vijay has avg of 17 in more matches..:haha:
Rahane's appearances have been more sporadic, except for one series against England (where he DID do badly). But, I think he's improved a lot and is a genuine opening candidate in the shorter formats - shown enough adaptability with the Royals.

Robin Uthappa -- Under Dravid(who gave him a settled role) 4 fifties, 13 innings ,409 runs ,average of 34 and strike rate of 103. Under Dhoni, only 1 fifty, 21 innings - 377 runs, average of 22 and strike rate of 82. Want to know the reason? Look at the changes in his batting position under Dhoni. 3,3,6,5,7,5,6,7,6,3,7,7,7,3,7,1,1,1,6,2,7. Is this a joke? Is this some street cricket or something? How can he constantly change his batting positions and get him up and down so much? You give him a proper role, like how he gave to a Vijay, Mukund, Sharma or Raina. Please learn to see things inside out before commenting on it. Dravid clearly handled him well and Dhoni didn't.

Rahane and Pujara should be preserved for longer formats...where they will do well always
Have you seen Pujara's List A record? One of the most impressive in the country along with Kedar Jadhav. Besides, we need a sheet anchor who can also up the tempo in the middle order.

We need Robin Uthappa in the team, for that Pujara and Rahane should stay away from the ODI team.

I agree with him. We need Robin Uthappa in the team' date=' for that Pujara and Rahane should stay away from the ODI team.[/quote'] By the same logic, Tendu, Dravid and Kumble should have been barred from playing ODIs because they were our best bats and spinner respectively. Let's just pick the best XI, and hope that they don't get injured. Pujara can score quite quickly when necessary and can score big. Ideal player for ODIs if he bats up the order a la Amla. Amla is a No.3 as well in Tests and an opener in ODIs. Dhawan and Pujara has a nice ring to it, despite Nohit's recent successes.

As much as I think he's a decent opener, Gambhir isn't really what India needs atm. We have a good young side, and we need to keep developing it. Even if our youngsters struggle in the beginning, we have to stick with them and let them grow as a team. This is how world-beating teams are made. Furthermore, our number one concern is to have a solid bowling unit. Again, this means identifying the best prospects and giving them games. This might mean 2 or 3 series of struggling, but in the long term it pays off.

Indian batting is in safe hands. No need to take backward step unless Gambhir shows some seriously outrageously form. Otherwise no point. Bowling is where 200% of our focus should be .

dhawan and rohit are walking wickets in australia...gambo and uthappa already proved themselves in cb series...
Uthappa is an overrated slogger like Umar Akmal. If you are from Pak, you may think he is tailunted but he is not good enough for international cricket.
