cricraja Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Ambrose, Holding, Roberts, Lillee, Thommo- they all had a 5-6 match series, taking 30+ wickets in those ones bowling with such menace, low average/er and bowling at 150kph range consistently. They took less wickets because they did have to contend with other brutally fast & menacing bowlers taking wickets also. If Johnson had another Johnson besides him, like Holding had Roberts, Marshall had Holding, he'd have taken less wickets too, correct ?To an extent that holds true for the late 70's and early-mid 80's WI'es team. Yet Marshall found a way to be the best of the rest, in his own team. Tells a tale. And Johnson has Harris and Siddle who are very very good indeed, and still he is finding a way to just outplay everyone and get wickets, bowling dream spells at tremendous speeds. That is how you identify yourself, by bowling as if you are from a different stratosphere.
Muloghonto Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 When fit? Really. Now you are clutching on to your straws. If's and but's. Fitness and injuries are a very important aspect of the game' date=' fair or not. On display Shane Bond is better than anyone, if only he stayed healthy. That does not mean we can place him, in the list of all time great bowlers based on "when fit".[/quote'] Yes, we can. It all depends on what you are looking for- a dream team for a series, for a year, for a decade. 'when fit, he is a gun player' makes the player a bigger risk to give a contract to, doesnt mean this player is any less than a fit-as-a-fiddle guy when he actually does play.

Yes and over the span of a series or two, the bowlers i named did it too- bowling at dizzying speeds and clearly leaving everyone else in their wake. Marshall started standing-out as a destructive bowler when Holding declined and Garner never quite found the interest to be super-destrutive (except for in Australia one year), he was more content on being the guy who takes 2-40 and 3-50 kinda figure with metronomic consistency at speeds slightly less than truely express. It also holds true for Lillee-Thommo combo as well.

Enough of you praising Reid. He is nowhere close to Johnson by any means.
MCcricket Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Right from Thommo, Lilee, Marshal, Akhtar, Waseem , Waqar I haven't seen anyone so devastating as well as effective in terms of wickets , he has taken it to a different level, for a period of time now he is taking 5 fers at will and single handedly blowing away good batting sides, there were bowlers faster, skillfull, fiercer then him but never ever such a combo of fast, fierce, bucket loads of wickets at the same time.
rkt.india Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Australia also tried to use Pattinson as an enforcer against us in last series in India and he had India in all sorts of trouble before Dhoni onslaught at Chepauk. Still remember his 150k yorker to clean bowl Vijay, but Pattinson is too young and his body cannot take the effort of that kind of bowling yet and is prone too injuries at this age.

zep1706 Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 its funny watching u people "argue" with this guy :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Only if I knew that before, learned it the hard way. :haha:
express bowling Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Johnson' s biggest feat is that he is terrorizing batsmen with the highest quality protective gear of the modern era. West Indian quicks lost their fear factor gradually, with the usage of more protective gear and then with the improvement in their quality. The two bouncer rule also contributed. Today's pacers don't have the luxury of terrorizing batters at 135 k to140 k.
express bowling Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 I have been telling for sometime that he uses ICF for typing practice. :cantstop:
Muloghonto Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Enough of you praising Reid. He is nowhere close to Johnson by any means. pray tell how you concluded this.
Muloghonto Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Right from Thommo' date=' Lilee, Marshal, Akhtar, Waseem , Waqar I haven't seen anyone so devastating as well as effective in terms of wickets , he has taken it to a different level, for a period of time now he is taking 5 fers at will and single handedly blowing away good batting sides, there were bowlers faster, skillfull, fiercer then him but never ever such a combo of fast, fierce, bucket loads of wickets at the same time.[/quote'] thats a load of hogwash. Thommo, Lillee, Marshall, Holding, Roberts- these guys went through sequences of 5-10 tests, taking 4 or 5 wickets an innings virtually every innings, taking more than 2x the wickets the next best bowler in their team, blowing teams away with raw aggression, skill, sheer speed and bucketload of wickets. So quit hyping Mitchell as a never seen before type of superlatives.

Today's pacers don't have the luxury of terrorizing batters at 135 k to140 k. modern gear means you wont die at the worst case scenario. Yes, its some assurance, but modern players dont want to get hit just as much as the oldies. Most modern batsmen still do not wear the chest protector ( it constricts their shot-making) and as such, can still get their chests bruised, fingers smashed, hit on the side of the head, etc. In anycase, lets see how much he terrorises batsmen in the future. as i said, he's going through a novelty factor. A bowler hasnt done this kind of bruising and wicket-taking till the peak of Akhtar at the latest. They will adapt & adjust.

div Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Morkel does not bowl regularly at 147-150kph. he bowls more at the 140-145 kph range. Steyn does not target the body as much, he doesn't need to since he's got so many tools in his kit that he doesnt need to do the classic 'peg them on the backfoot by bowling fast & at their body and then mix in a fast & full one for driving/lbw/bowled'. Morkel bowls at the speed of Joel Garner, with less control, bounce, brains and no yorker. Cheteshwar Pujara didn't have to think too hard when asked who the fastest bowler he has ever faced is. Morne Morkel. http://www.espncricinfo.com/south-africa-v-india-2013-14/content/story/700845.html
div Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Of the bowlers I've seen, being singlehandedly the difference and winning matches for their team, match after match, for 6-10 matches in a row, with frightening speed, intimidation & skill: Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop, Marshall, Holding, Lillee, Thommo, Roberts, Croft. Keep in mind, the big reason he's succeeding, apart from his obvious skill and menace, is because this crop of batsmen have not faced such quality hostility at top speed ( 147-150kph consistently) for some time now. Akhtar was the last of the 'menace' bowler before Johnson and his peak probably passed him around 2004-2006. It was harder to be this destructive back in the 70s-90s period because almost everyone faced such hostility in every other series, so the 'novelty factor' of facing such pace & bounce for the first time in years did not exist. Walsh :cantstop: Shane Warne The quickest I faced were Shaun Tait and Shoaib Akhtar. It was the unpredictability of their actions and rhythm that made you nervous
Muloghonto Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 Walsh :cantstop: Yeah you are probably one of those legions of desi kids who equate a 35 year old Walsh bowling at 135 and concluded that a 25 year old Walsh was incapable of 145kph consistently. Walsh was one of threw most intimidatory bowlers to face, despite his good natured approach because he bowled brutally fast and fed batsmen steeply deviating inswing perfume balls from good length. Practically impossible to play. Sent from my GT-S5830D using Tapatalk 2
