Its the same for most other South asians countries. Its cricket or bust. People like England have rugby football olympic sports. SA have football and rugby union Aus have rugby union, hockey football olympics sports. NZ have rugby union. WI have the american sports football and athletics etc. Ie these are multiple sport countries in which sports compete with each other. In England for eg cricket and rugby cannot sit back as they will lose the momentum against each other and further v football. I am pretty sure that if India was still awesome in field hockey then there is a good chance we would have a healthy competition among that and cricket. A bad performance in cricket would mean viewers leaving and administrators being forced to act. Long term all south asian nations need to have 2-3 major global sporting games in which they are a force + have a decent showing at the olympics. This means nations like India need to win 30 olympic medals and probably qualify for something like the football world cup on a regular basis + be a force in field hockey + be a force in cricket. I hope that happens in the next 50 years.
