Tiger80 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Vegetarians are less healthy than meat-eaters, a controversial study has concluded, despite drinking less, smoking less and being more physically active than their carnivorous counterparts. A study conducted by the Medical University of Graz in Austria found that the vegetarian diet, as characterized by intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products, appeared to carry elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The study used data from the Austrian Health Interview Survey to examine the dietary habits and lifestyle differences between meat-eaters and vegetarians. The 1320 subjects were matched according to their age, sex, and socioeconomic status and included 330 vegetarians, 330 that ate meat but still a lot of fruits and vegetables, 300 normal eaters but that ate less meat, and 330 on a more meat-heavy diet. It found that vegetarians consumed less alcohol and had lower body mass indexes, but were still in a poorer state of physical and mental health overall. Participants who ate less meat also showed a tendency to avoid attending doctors appointment for preventative measures such as vaccines, the authors found. It concluded: "Our study has shown that Austrian adults who consume a vegetarian diet are less healthy (in terms of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders), have a lower quality of life, and also require more medical treatment." The study's authors have already defended the research against claims that their work is simply an advertisement for the meat industry. Study coordinator and epidemiologist Nathalie Burkert told The Austrian Times: "We have already distanced ourselves from this claim as it is an incorrect interpretation of our data. We did find that vegetarians suffer more from certain conditions like asthma, cancer and mental illnesses than people that eat meat as well, but we cannot say what is the cause and what is the effect. "There needs to be further study done before this question can be answered." ] http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/science/Vegetarians-are-less-healthy-and-have-a-lower-quality-of-life-than-meat-eaters-scientists-say/articleshow/33225827.cms
Precambrian Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Yep pile of bullocks. People who are non Vegs by nature have their bodies tuned to such food. And it is lolworthy to think austrian vegetarians get the same kind of variety and type of vegetables as an Indian vegetarian gets in India.

Muloghonto Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Yep pile of bullocks. People who are non Vegs by nature have their bodies tuned to such food. And it is lolworthy to think austrian vegetarians get the same kind of variety and type of vegetables as an Indian vegetarian gets in India. The article does have merit in reality. Meat eaters i general can have greater negetive consequences from eating meat (Cholesterol, high BP, etc) but they tend to have greater balanced nutritional intake as well, particularly for protein. This is because, most meats are complete proteins while most veggies are not, so to get the complete spectrum of protein from veggies, multiple different types of veggies have to be consumed regularly. The reality is, in the west, most 'veggies' are woefully short on complete protein because they tend to be tofu-tarians and stuff like beans and lentils are not heavy part of the western diet. The well-to-do Indian veggie is obviously well nourished but India as a whole is a severely malnourished nation so Indian veggies, by the law of averages, are less nutritionally balanced in their diets.

CSK Fan Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Yes vegetarians get paid by cows and sheep for propaganda. Unless you eat dal (pulses) every day of the week, I do not know how you get will sufficient protein and even then that is a very inferior protein when compared to meat

EnterTheVoid Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I just returned home after holidaying in Japan for six weeks. Japanese people have one of the highest life expectancies in the world and it is mostly down to the food they eat. The ratio of veg to non veg in their meals is 70:30.

I don't get the divide between veggies and non-veggies. They claim as if we eat kgs raw meat without any vegetables. Even in India, most non veggies have a similar ratio. Mine is even lesser.
CSK Fan Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Milk and dairy products Do you know how many people have intolerance to lactose? Milk was never a good way to get your proteins in the first place. We were never meant to digest milk from a different species, it is because we are fed milk right from child hood that we adapt to it

We were never meant to digest milk from a different species' date= it is because we are fed milk right from child hood that we adapt to it :itsme: I don't like milk. I will drink only with complan or chocos. I cannot stand the smell of curd or buttermilk, it causes nausea for me. I have been mocked by a lot of people saying as if not eating curd is a crime. "ooo u don't like curd?? that's wierd". Only my dad eats curd and buttermilk. My mom, brother, sister have the same curd phobia like me.

EnterTheVoid Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 @ Detonator Even if you eat non veg, meat should only make up 30% of your diet. The rest should come from fruits, vegetables, grains and diary products. I ate Japanese food three times a day, every freaking day for six weeks. Their meals have the 70:30 ratio. Take it from me, their food is as healthy as it gets, you don't live to an average of 85 years without eating the right food.
