How would the Indian media have covered the US performance in the FIFA World Cup?

The USA lost in the 2nd round of the FIFA soccer world cup. They were beaten by Belgium. Before that they lost to Germany, drew with Portugal and beat Ghana. A decent mid-tier performance. Accordingly, the US media focused on the following points: Interest in soccer is increasing. More people watched the USA-Portugal match than the Super Bowl. US nearly defeated Portugal, a team with the best player in the world. They lost to Belgium, a higher ranked team that played better. However they took the game to extra time. In the closing stages of extra time, they even pulled a goal back. The US goal keeper Tim Howard was magnificent. He made 16 saves, a world cup record, earning him monikers such as “Secretary of Defense”, “Captain America” and so on! US hosting the 1994 soccer World Cup has popularized the game. Since then, the country has climbed to # 15 in the world soccer rankings. With more migrants showing interest in soccer, the game is set to boom. Major League Soccer is spurring the game’s popularity with youth. President Obama called up Howard and the US soccer team captain and wished them luck. President Obama tweeted in support of the US team. Best days of soccer are ahead for America. Now, for a moment assume that the Indian media is in place of the US media. How would they have covered it? Yet again, US loses in the pre-quarter finals. In the 84 year history of the world cup, US have never made the quarter finals. US lost two matches, drew one and won just one. They contrived to draw a match with Portugal, one that they had nearly won! US, the most powerful country on earth with 35 crore people, cannot find a way past Belgium, a tiny European nation with a population of a mere 1.1 crore people. Even though the match went to extra time, it was dominated by Belgium all the way through. The late goal was useless as it could not change the result. It is true that the US goal keeper made a record number of saves. It is also because the defense allowed Belgium to take so many shots on goal. Let us not forget that the goalie let in two that lost us the match. It is not like the Mexican who saved the match or the Costa Rican or Brazilian goalies who helped win a match. Let us not get carried away with the Howard mania. There was major hype when the US hosted the ’94 World Cup. Big stadiums were built, huge crowds thronged to view the action but results have not changed since then. We remain stuck in the mid-tier category. US already has migrants from Germany, Mexico, Costa Rica etc. However, the US performance does not match those of the European or Latin American teams. Major League soccer teams cannot compete with Manchester United, Bayern Munich or Barcelona. It is a hyped league with retired stars and sub-standard performance levels. President Obama should wish a team only after they have won the World Cup. Look at the American president! Tweeting good luck to the team instead of addressing more pressing issues confronting the nation. It will be dull and gloomy and mediocre as usual. Any wonder most Indians feel angry and listless after reading our mainstream media? Go unreal instead!

World Cup 2014: How World Cup cash is paid to teams, players

From its near $4.5 billion in revenue from broadcasters, sponsors, hospitality and licensing deals, FIFA distributes just over $400 million to the 32 national federations taking part in the tournament. Here is how some of that money breaks down: ___ FIRST PRIZE The winner between Germany and Argentina in the final will get $35 million in prize money paid to its national federation, which can spend the money as it chooses. That's $5 million more than the $30 million Spain took home from South Africa four years ago. The runner up gets $25 million (up from $24 million in 2010), while the third- and fourth-place teams get $22 million and $20 million, respectively.

Bengal's FIFA fever is Sony's jackpot State accounts for 50% of viewership; Bengali women also glued to matches

For Multi Screen Media (MSM), the company broadcasting the FIFA World Cup 2014 in India, Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal is a state that has made a significant difference. Believe it or not, the football frenzy across the state has contributed nearly 50 per cent to the network's viewership for this edition of the football tournament. MSM is telecasting the World Cup in Brazil on its sports channels, Sony Six and Sony Six HD, in English. But it sprang a smart surprise by deciding to also broadcast the match on its regional channel, Sony Aath, in Bengali. The matches in the last round of the group stage, which were played simultaneously, were also telecast on the network's English movie channel, Sony Pix. For the 59 matches played in the tournament so far, the combined viewership has been 0.89 million. This is based on viewership among males above 15 years of age across India's cable and satellite homes. Viewership refers to the total number of people watching an event at any given point. Of this, more than 50 per cent, or 0.45 million viewers, were accounted for by West Bengal alone. (THE FINAL SHOWDOWN) Interestingly, it is not only the Bengali man who is glued to his TV screen for football matches. The share of women in the total number of people watching football matches in this edition of the tournament is 45 per cent in West Bengal - much higher than the global average of 40 per cent and all-India average (CS4+) of 33 per cent. In Bengal, the Sony Aath viewership had an almost equal split between male and female viewers - 55 per cent and 45 per cent, respectively.
