It would look really bad and would also be unfair if Cong, the second largest party, is not allowed to name a LoP while the third largest party AIADMK is allowed. It would look highly partisan. But with Jaya Mamta you never know

They need to be ruthless and try every dirty tricks possible against Cong.... There's nothing unfair to a dirty party like Congress...

There's nothing unfair to a dirty party like Congress... LoP is largely a ceremonial position so there is no point at all in taking revenge w.r.t. I do agree that BJP should try to make sure that the Gandhis are booted out of Cong - as for removing the Cong from India..........that ain't happening anyitme soon. But for the BJP, the first priority should be strengthen the party in South India and other areas where they are still quite weak, rather than trying to weaken Cong.

Both are state parties which will never leave their respective states, by joining together against a single national party, they will just provide the bjp a easier target to attack and there by get free publicity in the two states. But if it is just a ceremonial position of no real consequence then i suppose it makes no difference.

Sachin=GOD Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Congress mulls asking TRS for merger to avoid being at Speaker's mercy Lok Sabha elections has not only decimated the Congress party which has won just 44 out of 543 seats, as a corollary, the results could very well ensure that the Congress’ role as the leader of the opposition (LOP) could also be under severe threat. A party needs to win at least 10% of seats in Lok Sabha to obtain the status. The Times of India says, "the legal framework has taken into account a situation where there is officially no LOP. In such cases, the leader of the single largest group in opposition in the Lok Sabha -- still the Congress in this case -- will function as leader of the bloc". This has happened even in 1984, when the Telegu Desam Party, the second largest party acted as de facto LOP with just 30 seats. The Speaker of the house can recognise a parliamentary group and give status of LOP to the largest opposition party. Sources are telling The News Minute (TNM) that some senior leaders in the Congress party are of the view that the Congress should have the LOP post without being at the Speaker's mercy. One of the suggestions made by some senior leaders to increase the Congress' tally is to try for a merger with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti. TRS secured 11 Lok Sabha seats which when clubbed with the Congress’ 44 would add up to 55. The TRS and Congress merger was a deal before Telangana was created. Sonia Gandhi and K. Chandrasekhara Rao (KCR) share a good equation. But the merger never happened as some TRS leaders were opposed to it. Sources have told The News Minute (TNM) that hectic activity is afoot in New Delhi to prevent this massive loss of face for the Sonia and Rahul Gandhi. Though this idea is being mulled upon, the chances of TRS agreeing to a merger is almost nil. TRS is in a comfortable position to form its government in Telangana. Rumours are being floated to suggesting that the AIADMK and the TMC – Jayalalithaa Jayaram and Mamata Banerjee – can come together to share the position of the leader of the opposition, but constitutional experts have told the TNM that is not possible. The other rumour being floated is that the leader of the opposition has SPG protection which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi require. This is untrue as the Gandhis have the highest protection India can secure because of the assassination of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The leader of the opposition has Cabinet rank status. All Cabinet ministers in India do not have SPG protection. link
