fineleg Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 India has lacked genuine fast bowlers for way too long - rare exceptions aside. How or when will bcci recognize the need to develop a good culture of encouraging genuine pacers?

Compared to how things were 10 years ago, pacers not get regular A tours, much better pitches in domestic cricket, top class medical facilities, access to world class bowling coaches in IPL, complete financial security and so on. While BCCI should get a lot of blame, how about putting some onus on the individuals themselves?

It is really difficult for young pacers in India to develop due to these reasons as they lack the guidance and their potential rarely turns into finished product.

All these guys make plenty of money through IPL now. Nothing stops them from hiring personal world class coaches and physical trainers and psychologists if needed. We can go on blaming the culture, the BCCI and the system, but at some stage I would love to see these pacers also take some responsibility.

There must be a reason we have not produced a single world class fast bowler ever. Was every bowler who shined for a brief period and but couldn't fulfill his potential was to be blamed? There may be many reason for them to fail, but this is one basic reason that cannot be ignored.

Scarves Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 You need someone that young players looked up to. Kids didn't look up to Kapil Dev at all when you had Tendulkar, Azhar, Ganguly, Dravid and so on. Kids in Australia wanted to be either like Bradman or be like Thomson, Lillee and all those quick bowlers. Brits wanted to be like Botham, Pakistanis wanted to be like Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib. You need a player that drives kids to be like them. Right now you have Steyn and Johnson that kids want to bowl like. Indians just want to be batsmen because they idolized them.

City kids are coached to death by idiotic coaches about line and length nonsense and stunting the growth of these kids. Pitches are bane for fast bowlers, even if MJ is bowling on these pitches day in day out getting hammered would think twice in giving all out effort, gradually will lose pace and become trundler.

Lot of bowlers start their career bowling fast. Munaf a case in point. They lose their pace on their own. Then we end up blaming Venky everyone except the bowlers themselves. Having played cricket in US with few Pakistanis one thing I learnt I they all WANT to bowl fast. There is n inbuilt desire from everyone. That desire hs to come from within. But Indian bowlers don't push themselves to test their limits. You think Pakistan has great coaching, facilities? Our bowlers gradually lose their pace in an attempt to prolong their careers as genuine fast bowling comes with the risk of getting injured often.

Pakistanis have that culture in Pak we don't. In India, at low level if you try to bowl bouncers, you will be scolded by both coach and the batsman. You cannot try to bowl quick and spray the ball. You will be straightaway taunted by "bahut Shoiab Akhtar ban raha hai..." This isn't the mentality in Pak. Teams like SA, Aus 20-30 genuine fast bowlers at low level and out of those best 2-3 become good and make it to top level. While in India if we get 3-4, we start thinking all of them will become world class but that will never happen. We need more of them to select best out of them.

Being tall is huge advantage In test cricket. A big reason why even the best subcontinental bowlers suck in Australia with the kuckaboora balls is because they lack the height to be effective their. Just look at Mohammed Shami, bowled quick, accurately and with some seam movement in New zealand and ended up getting outplayed by Ishant. But I agree we need to stop being a factory of producing Short medium fast swing bowlers. Although they can be effective in India because of the slow pitches and the SG ball, in south africa and Oceania they will get exposed.

Pankaj Singh is tall but bowls only 130-132, there are quite a few like that in 130 range! Need to find the 140-145 ones. Some say Pankaj Singh can hit 137???, but I dunno, we will see in Eng practice matches.
