You are the first one to bring Sachin in the OP. And it was obvious the adulation itself was one of the reasons he was given the award. Millions used to watch him at his peak, stopping on the road, leaving all work. Hardly see the same interest nowadays. He was a role model for so many, in a survey by Outlook in 98, he was second after Gandhi in the most known name in entire India. It is because of all these reasons he was given the Bharat Ratna and not for being a great cricketer alone. There is a reason people had tears in their eyes when he retired. Doubt that will happen for any other cricketer or sportsperson in India on that scale
