undisputed chap Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Recently during the nz vs wi test series Ian bishop mentioned that windies don't produce world class players not only because the lack the infrastructure but also because the windies players don't play county cricket. In the past the talened & passionate cricketers from windies used to play competitive cricket in England. They refined their skills there & became much complete players. Going through the cricinfo summaries i noticed that almost all the best bowlers in the world have played county cricket. They include: Steyn Philander Morkel Harris Southee Kemar roach Peter Siddle Wasim Akram Waqar Imran Malcolm Marshall etc All of the above are very good to great bowlers. Not all the bowlers who emerge out of county cricket are world beaters. But some of the good bowlers india has produced like zaheer & srinath have played county. Zaheer also mentions how it helped him save his career. From history we have seen that indian fast bowlers often struggle to hit the right lengths especially when we travel abroad. This is due to the fact that they play most of their cricket on a single ground where spinners bowl 80% of the overs. On intl stage when the spotlight is on them they crumble leading to an abject surrender time after time . So shouldnt the babus at BCCI be encouraging the youngesters to play county cricket & acting as agents to secure county contracts for promising bowlers. Apparently the babus at BCCI have forbidden players from playing 4 day matches in counties. Shows how much BCCI is corncerned about the development of fast bowlers in India . :headshake:

This way you can learn a lot. more than that there is just continuous bowling with different kind of ball in india majority of overs are bowled by spinners and faster bowlers have one job to keep it at length on off stump but in county you have to bowl tons of overs and learn to get wickets it is not place to correct action or technique imo but you can perfect your bowling style

Else Ojha and Chawla would have been taking bucket loads of wickets. Or Kaif and Yuvraj would have gone onto become very successful test cricketers.

They learn how to read the pitches better. They learn to bowl in different weather conditions, how to extract swing on bounce in different conditions. They learn to take wickets when the batsman are on top. There's no way you can learn these things in ranji trophy. No coach can teach you that. You learn it only by playing & bowling tons of overs. Thats why we get talented bowlers who are so promising but fizzle out soon as they don't have the know how to grow that extra bit to achieving greatness.

In the past, it could have made a difference because we didnt have good facilities in our country. Now we have a variety of pitches which offer bounce, swing and seam movement contrary to the opinion that all pitches in India are flat. Some of our young batsmen could benefit from playing in county because quality of fast bowling is better in Eng and even higher in Australia. But they go on A tours and get enough exposure nowadays and batting is not really our problem. Pitches in England are nowhere as good for bowling as they used to be. Many of them have become flat and slow. I highly doubt that a county stint will make any difference for bowlers.

No, we do not have pitches which offer much bounce and pace. They do offer seam and swing, but pace and bounce is what causes problem overseas to our batsmen in LOIs because most pitches do not offer much seam and swing in ODIs but pace and bounce.

Helpful pitches + loads of bowling experience + better coaches combo is much better then decent pitches + few overs + overall poor coaching facilities in India.

BCCI can easily hire these foreign coaches for domestic teams. We can also get foreign players and get them to play in our state sides like in county cricket. BCCI has the means, what they lack is the will. Also, 70 % of overs in FC are not bowled by spinners anymore like in the past. In Ranji cricket nowadays, the leading wicket takers are seamers and they bowl majority of the overs in most centers.

IMO Ishant should have said **** you to Prasad and followed Zaheer while in the Indian test team. If he had restricted himself to only test cricket for the first five years and played county instead of mickey mouse ODI tournaments, he would have been on a different zone right now. I think even in the worst case scenario, he would have been a Stuart Broad for us. Also the pattas at home turn our bowlers into cowards. they are just scared to try anything other than length. they dont have the guts of say Totsobe or Parnell or Faulkner or Boult - who are not in the top 10 bowlers of the world, but bowl with lot of guts and passion even while staying well within their limitations.

Even in India, fast bowlers get to bowl over 300 overs. Bumrah in his first season bowled second highest number of overs for Gujarat over 300 overs.

True the county cricket has restrictions & it may evev be justified but it may be great for the big 3 to open up a few no. of slots for each others players in some of the domestic tournaments. This will be great for the overall development of cricket. The boards could act as agents to draw up & secure contracts for deserving players of their country. As far as ipl is concerned i am against letting uncapped players especially under 25y.o. play in ipl. Also a system could be incorporated where players playing in overseas are given preferences in matters of selection especially in an overseas tour.

I have mentioned the innings they bowled in so that we can make a fair comparison if someone digs out how many overs Indian pace bowlers bowled in how many Ranji innings. It will be interesting to see the comparison just to get more clarification on this.
