Malcolm Merlyn
Varun is severely injury prone. Few months and he picks up some or other injury unfortunately. To have him in playing 11 is a risk given that he collapses mid way during the spell. Luckily we had 365 to defend yesterday. Imagine defending average scores with one specialist bowler less. So far: 9 innings - 11 wickets, economy 6.61 Below par short ODI career so far for a specialist bowler. Doesn't takes enough wicket and also leaks lot of runs. Does any other specialist pace bowler has higher economy rate than Varun ? Jade Dernbach or Umesh Yadav ? Certainly strike bowlers take more than 11 wickets in 9 innings. Neither he is being a wicket taker nor is he managing to keep the runs per over at an acceptable rate. Hope he shows tremendous improvement in performances as well as being injured less frequently. First injury in over a year.Injuries happen to every express bowler. Link to comment
Straight Drive
First injury in over a year.Injuries happen to every express bowler. I thought he was injured in between as well. Glad to be corrected. Would like to know how many injuries he has suffered in past 3 years. Still, his ODI performances have been below average on basis of stats i mentioned and needs lot of improvement. I would accept that economy rate only if he was a strike bowler, not from someone who picks just about one wicket every innings. Link to comment

Straight Drive
In last one year' date=' BK averages 55 in ODIs with 19 wickets in 25 matches[/quote'] Having a look at the overall table, i feel Shami and Ishant are the best ODI performers amongst those listed. They have taken many 4 fers whereas Varun and Umesh have none. Like the batsmen must convert a 30 run start to a ton, the bowlers should be looking to convert 2 wickets into 4 or 5 wicket haul. We hope experience will make them better bowlers and they will learn to convert the starts as they play more international cricket. In a 4 bowlers attack the options of having bowlers who have picked 4 and 5 wicket hauls becomes more important than it would be in case of 5 bowlers attack. also Ishant and Shami have better rpo and SR than Varun and Umesh. Regarding Bhuvi, from the selective stat you posted, it is evident that his form has been below average in last 25 matches. At the very least he should be having more wickets than the innings he has bowled in, considering that he is a specialist bowler. Link to comment
HIC_NAA
In last one year' date=' BK averages 55 in ODIs with 19 wickets in 25 matches[/quote'] If we drill down Umesh stats, i dont think he would have completed 10 overs in even 5 matches. Dhoni has never used Umesh well. Link to comment
vishalvirsingh
Varun proved two Points on that day( match with Lanka) 1. He is Very Fast- i thought he was a 145k bowler but i now know that he has the capability to bowl 154- 155( he will bowl that in Australia if selected)......... he bowled i guess three balls higher than 151k to 152.5k. 2. there was one four which dilshan got- it was a third slip easy catch....Lankans were not interested to play him -instead were only wanting to survive...He was way too Fast for them to handle- it is practically not possible for any batsman to face 145k + bowling ..they r looking to just Survive... 3. Varun arron tries just too hard and hence gets injured- i guess he needs to slow down a bit and be a 140 to 145k bowler.. yesterday his average speed was i guess 146k. 4. if he is FIT- he should be picked and played for sure..with out thinking twice...he is way way better then UMESH ISHANT BHUVI and EVEN SHAMMI...I am 100 % Sure about that. his FITNESS is a BIG question Mark.. can some body share whether he will play in the lanka matches or is he rested for the entire series. vishalvirsingh
India Needs Genuine Pace in Australia and in World CUP.. Genuine Pace- i guess Varun, Umesh and to Shammi can only Provide Genuine Pace. IShant with his Bounce can also be considered. Bhuvi with his swing capabilities can be picked up. i guess if they wanna take an allrounder than the other medium pacer rishi dhawan is a 130K bowler too..is a better bet than Stuart Binny. Karn Sharma and the left arm Patel are probably proving to be better than Ashwin and jadeja. Both have faired very well when ever they have got chance and i strongly beleive that they should be played. for me team to australia should be:- Fast bowlers- Varun, ishant, umesh, shammi,Bhuvi All rounder- Rishi Dhawan or an extra Fast Bowler Pankaj Singh. Batsman- dhawan, rahane, kohli, pujara, rohit,Murli vijay, Naman Ojha or KL Rahul. Keeper- DHoni Spinner- Karn Sharma, Patel and Jadeja. Link to comment
