Just posting my previous posts from another thread here. FIFA WC finals is THE biggest event in Europe and even if their team isn't playing they WILL watch the game. People are in an alternate world if you think Europe doesn't watches football matches because their country doesn't participate. You need to STOP passing on how you view the game to how others watch it. Check these numbers for countries where the games where 'neutral'. Europe exclusive of Russian part is smaller than India in physical area and much smaller in size and about as diverse. South America is Demographically much smaller than Indian SC again. Europe and South American put together is not equal to SC in demographic sense. its just that Rest of the world plays football sees it as important and watches it that is the key difference, they seem to have got USA and China seems interested too. T20 cricket can theoretically rival football might even challenge it given the correct development for a few decades.

Is every tom , dick , harry going to leave all his work and sit in front of a television for two neutral teams ? I am sure there was a big difference between the number of viewers who watched the 2007 and 2011 WC Finals in India.

I have already countered the population argument. There are 4 times more countries playing the world cup and India ALSO watches the world cup final. These aren't mutually exclusive sets of population watching football. Before the QF, SF and finals - there were 50M viewers in India (according to TAM) who watched the FIFA WC. I am interested in this statistic for T20. I think T20 can easily break football viewership records particularly due the nature of the sport.

In Europe there is football culture were family wears the gear and heads out to watch the game in a nearby screen, does not happen in India. At an event level and not seeing any specific game yeah FIFA WC will have more countries interested, thereby to the final thats an agreeable argument.

I don't think so. Most people in India ( especially rural india) don't give a crap about football especially when its played at midnight time according to IST. The situation maybe same for BD & Pakistan. But comparing it with cricket being a rather popular sport in this region & it being played in england & people in SC getting to view it in the evenings means huge viewership. This champions trophy also had India playing the best cricket in recent times. I can totally imagine football wc being outviewed by cricket in asia heck even the earlier ipl finals may would have gotten more viewership in asia then this years wc final got in asia .

Dude you are providing circumstantial evidence, is it your point that similar numbers of people as would a cricket match involving India in a final would watch a Germany - Argentina match at 2 am in India, if it is its a bit off. This is entirely possible because of some bias in TRP calculation in India for cricket matches, not all people supposedly glued to the TV are glued to the TV for cricket matches. but none the less would be counted so its very much possible that Cricket ICC event finals might have piped some FIFA final events . For Football as you say European football culture is no way present in India, its just a few enthusiasts especially ones that are in urban upper middle class, i doubt if aam admi even knows and cares about FIFA WC when India has not even qualified, there are lots of non football watching swathes in the country like TN Andra belt.

We have more population anyway". To counter that I mentioned 2 points - (1) There are 4 times the countries that are in the football WC than cricket and (2) Indians too do watch football. Even if 50% of Delhi and Mumbai would watch the FIFA WC final, that would be a number close to 40-50 M. So, the numbers being inflated due to population is balanced by the two points I mentioned earlier. Of course, all this IF the statistic is true.

I don't think more than 10-15% mumbaikars would have watched it live.

10 per cent of delhites or mumbaikars watching fifa wc at 2 is a HUGE exaggeration.

I was being generous there. Also if we move away from the metros even people who are aware of the wc watched it a lot less then the previous football wc due to awful timings.

I think also what happens in europe is that these countries have other games they are interested in. This time around the games were at prime time in europe or western europe. Like say 8pm or 9pm. Perfect when you dont have to skip work and can hang out with friends in a pub/bar. A large % of the crowd is like I dont mind football. Will watch it if its on but wont make a special effort to watch it. The 2002 WC was a major dip in terms of figures. I think only 30% saw it in western europe due to the timings involved. You will see a dip in figures in europe for the russia WC in 2018. The times are not as good as for this WC.
