shortbread Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 I thought his first 50 was an amazing stroke of luck but this boy knows how to wield the bat with some class. And he's presently India's best paceman by far!! God, we had a similar phenomenon a good few years ago and you took it away from us. Please don't do it again!!
Lord Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Chappell ruined Pathan by batting him at 3.Dont see it happening with Bhuvi
sourab10forever Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 FOCUS on the bowling.....the golden rule says....200 cant win u a test....20 wickets can
King Tendulkar Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 crapthan was always rubbish His batting is a myth. Looked like he was chopping tress while wielding the willow
Lord Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 crapthan was always rubbish His batting is a myth. Looked like he was chopping tress while wielding the willow you said the same about Dhawan I remember :giggle:
Bleed-Blue Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Pathan was more of a limited overs batmen and had limited mount of strokes (mainly slog to the Legside) wheras Bhuvi plays like top order batsmen.
moniker Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Chappell ruined Pathan by batting him at 3.Dont see it happening with Bhuvi Pathan batted at no 7 in tests.
Lord Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Pathan batted at no 7 in tests. opened few times.batted at 3 in ODIs
Temujin Khaghan Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Pathan had the bad influence of lazy people like nehra, rp and munaf around him. for all his talent, even zaheer had a bad attitude towards fitness until he went to France recently to get in shape. Zaheer had talent and skills, but just wouldnt put the effort in running and fitness. Pathan was a 19 year old and got influenced by all these lazy people. If he made an entry now, iam sure the story would have been different. on his best day he is as talented as bhuvi with the bat and ball. i dont think he had bhuvi's stamina though. another weakness of his was that, he got very quickly distracted with party lifestyle the moment he saw some success.

vvvslaxman Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Pathan's roblem was his release, His action got all messed up
kubrickian Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Let Bhuvi concentrate on his bowling and any runs he scores should be considered a bonus. Don't promote him up the order or try to fit him into an all rounder spot or anything. He will be alright.
CoverDrive Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 given the level of batting across teams from lower order he is batting at the right position. number 9 is expected to now contribute with runs
undisputed chap Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I think the main problem with pathan was Greg Chappel's greed. He saw potential in a youngster & tried to play god. Pathan was always a bowler first who could bat a bit but Greg tried to turn him into a batting all rounder which pathan couldnt handle. He eventually lost his bowling & was kicked out.
saneindian Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 All this theory of Irfan's bowling getting messed up due to his batting sounds like bunk to me. He was never the same bowler after trying to change his action during the Pak/WI tours in 2006 to gain more pace. IIRC he went to Holding, Akram, Garner and even late Andy Roberts! By the time he realized he was not a 140+ bowler, it was over. Injuries have since then derailed him totally. Batting IMO did not derail him, the desire of Chappel to see him become a 140+ bowler did (strange given that same Chappel advised Munaf to control his speed to avoid injuries) What Bhuvi can learn from Pathan (and to a lesser extent Ishant) case is to ensure he doesn't try to change his action in an attempt to become a more skillful bowler. Remain focussed on his own strength, and not be in a hurry at all to tick all the boxes required to become a long term successful test bowler. Let things come gradually. So far little we have seen shows he's on the right track. After another 20-25 tests, we will get to know if he's really that 300 test wickets bowler for us or not.

Its important that BCCI also prepare pitches at home which suit seamers and test the batsmen. Pitches which will encourage seamers and improve their wicket taking ability and also make our batsmen better by challenging them. It will make the team more successful overseas. The quality of pitches we play at home leaves a lot to be desired. A good pitch should have something in it for everyone. Nice pace, bounce and carry for seamers and spin as we approach 4th and 5th days. Lord's pitch is a good example. A pitch which doesnt have pace, bounce or seam movement for seamers should be categorized as poor like the Trent Bridge pitch because you are basically negating one set of players.
