Marco Polo Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Okay. First of all these are my personal experiences. I just want to share with you people and I would like to know your thoughts. I'm 27 years old and I am from Delhi. I'm helping my dad with our family business. All of my friends are around my age group. One of my friend from School days got married last week. He's my best friend and I came to Hyderabad three days before the marriage to help him out. He is working as a lecturer in one of the best colleges in India. The day before his marriage lot of his students also stayed at the marriage hall with us. I was curious to have a chat with them as they all looked friendly. I hide my identity( that I'm friend of the lecturer) and started to chat with them in a room we stayed at the marriage hall. Since I was 6-7 years older than them, I was able to connect with them easily and started know them better. Few things I heard from them were really shocking. Almost all them ( some 17 people) drink, smoke, 70% of them smoke weed , 60 of them smoke weed regularly. Only two of them workout or health conscious. Nobody knew about the word " 26/11 attacks" but most of them know about 9/11. Not even guy knew about our history. Not even one dude know how Bangladesh was created by India( I wasn't interested in explaining to them as it would disconnect with them) Nobody is interested in joining the army. When I told them my uncles were in the army, the first question was to know if they brought military rum and whisky to drink!!!!... Their idea of life is very different from what I thought it would be. Few of them want to go to USA and have fun. They think after getting educated from the college, they just want to join a IT company, earn 40, 50 thousand bucks a month, have sex with the hot girls working there, drink, smoke weed, go to pubs , dance clubs...basically a dream world, plastic life style. One good thing about them is that they don't care about caste system. Other than that, i was absolutely disappointed and disgusted to a certain extent. I came to Delhi heavy hearted knowing most of the kids stuck in this plastic world. They are 6-7 years younger than me but I'm wondering if India has changed so much in just these 6-7 years. I'm sharing this with you guys as few of you people are very experienced in life. Please share your thoughts.

I'm sorry I forgot to add that bit in the opening post because I thought it was irrelevant to the point I was trying to make. I was very eager to join the army as my uncles and lot of my relatives are in the army but I failed in entrance exams for NDA. If I had a chance to choose between army and our family business, I would choose army. My point was that none of them had the desire to join the army because they thought those who chose army are poor people.

A lot of the young people (I mean those of my age or a few years younger than me) I have met in the last few years are very ignorant about whats happening around them. A lot of the "news" they get is from social media and they believe it without checking it from other sources (TBH I'm also guilty of that - many times I also believe in what I see on twitter without checking other sources). Another thing I've noticed is that the attention span has been decreasing - if you give someone a long article to read or to start a lengthy discussion about something and even if he/she is interested in the topic, they might not completely read the article/participate in the discussion after a point of time because they just can't seem to concentrate on one thing for a long time - effects of social media maybe? BTW I think this attention span thing is not just limited to Indians - its happening all over the world now. On another note - here's something that happened yesterday: this is a picture of Prez Obama watching USA-Germany WC match on Air Force One: Somebody photoshopped this to show a screenshot from Salman Khan's Kick - and many people believed it - they didn't even stop to think how implausible it was - they just believed it because they saw it on FB/Twitter :wall: :wall:

When I told them I did farming and drove tractors, at their age for 2 years and helped my grandpa , they laughed at me as if I was a loser. They strongly believe army and farming is for poor people and losers. . They don't realize army and farming are very important for our country.

But to think these are the only priorities in their lives was depressing. To have lower opinions about those who do physical work to earn money was a failure in part of their parents and I'm just expressing my disappointment. If you think that's offensive, I am not gonna argue with you.
JourneyMan Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 This is what I call 'lack of hunger'. I grew up in Europe but my parents came from India to wash dishes in a restaurant. I grew up in a council estate surrounded by many other children of immigrants. What you described is what I grew up seeing in a lot of middle and upper class Europeans. There is no hunger, no ambition, no desire to achieve anything in life. The reason why immigration blew out of control here was because nobody wanted to do the labour work, and soon what is going to happen (it's already happened in America and benefitted Indians and Chinese people in America) is that nobody will want to do white collar work either. However, what you saw are only one portion of Indian society (middle and upper class). There are still MANY Indians with hunger, with ambition, with drive. Patriotism is dying out in India the way it has died out in Europe. I have hardly met anyone who is enthusiastic or ambitious about joining the army. Being in the military used to be seen as an honour, as something prestigious. They say 'you only live once'. I agree - you only have one chance to go out in life and achieve something. If you want to spend it rotting away like a carcass with repetitive and uninspiring sessions of drugs, booze and imaginary sex then it would have been better not to have lived at all.

maniac Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 You can't expect a 17-18 to think differently,it's a positive sign India is doing well in a way....I mean you wont see kids in Afghanistan or any other war torn countries think the same way these kids think....now you have a conversation with a kids from these countries maybe you will see more nationalistic or some kind of revolutionary ideas burning inside them. Most kids from america,u.k or matter of fact any other developed country have a similar chain of thought. You cannot generalize....I am proud to say my nephew chose to join the army medical school even though he got admission into a good private school(it's free that's another topic :giggle:) but that's besides the point....he genuinely wanted to join army medical school and that was his aim from the start. I am sure there are many other kids who have a goal to go into the nda like you yourself mentioned was one of your ambitions. I don't think we need to hit the panic button yet.

It goes something like when he bats, the USA production goes down by 5%. There is not a single credible source for this quote...We live in an era of documentation, everything Obama says gets documented. I don't have a problem with people coming up with crap but the people who believe it and run with it.

You were just in a crowd that didn't agree with your sentiments. There is nothing wrong with dreaming of 40-50k/mo. jobs and having fun. There is nothing shocking about it! As far as joining the military is concerned, India has the third highest active manpower. It's only behind China and USA. I am guessing, there are a lot of young guys/girls who want to join the Indian military.
