sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Ashwin bowled well today. There wasn't any real spin available today but he was flighting the ball (and was inviting the drive). Some balls were shooting up. I do wish we had more runs to play with. I hope he does the same tomorrow. I personally rate Ashwin and I feel he can improve and become a good spinner. People who are stat obsessed about his overseas record (which is crap and he deserves criticism for that), should read this article - http://www.wisdenindia.com/cricket-article/ashwin-great-expectations/119721
gattaca Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Yes bowled people need to get the kick on the butt so they wont be complacent. Should have been selected for 3rd test. We are going to lose the series now 3-1 anyway.
Lord Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Was impressed that he was sticking to his offies and not trying to change angles or try variations as he previously did in Aus and SA.
sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 Not brilliantly but very good nonetheless Not meant to be taken literally. Considering what he is usually capable of overseas (comedy), it was a really good performance.
Lord Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 That article makes a very good point about Kumble. We cant expect our spinners to be succesful straightaway, very rarely has that happened. We have to be patient. Ashwin is the right man to back bcoz he can contribute with the bat in the time he develops into a reliable bowler overseas. I would also extend it to Jaddu.People call him darter, but I think hes the sort of guy who can exploit rough or helpful conditions better due to his quicker pace and accuracy. Its just that his style is different from what we call 'conventional'.More Kumble than Warne. Can be a decent backup to Ashwin imo
ThePhenomenal1 Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Well firstly, he helped save the team from folding under 100. Credit to his well played 40. Yes he bowled well! Flighted and had drift. A shame there were no close in fielders. Need 1 more slip and maybe another guy in front. And then a few to save easy singles and a boundary man. Was impressed, hope wickets come. Even if they come by bad umpiring, he needs the wickets to boost confidence and keep attacking.
sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 If only Ashwin had used his brains a bit more (and controlled his aggression), today Dhoni would have got a century and India would have had a 250 score. I expect England to attack his "compulsive hooking" weakness in the next few innings.
vvvslaxman Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 He didn't experiment too much. Kept a tight channel. Need a silly point for right handers for sure.

vvvslaxman Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Sad fact is that if Ashwin had used his brains a bit more (and controlled his aggression), today Dhoni would got a century and India would have had a 250 score. I expect England to attack his "compulsive hooking" weakness in the next few innings. IN your definition .. "KNow the ball you are going to get out beforehand and avoid playing that ball" :cantstop: Not possible for anyone. Because he could have gotten out in any of the shots he played earlier. That would have been the "brain fart" shot

adi B Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 i think he bowled really well.hopefully jadeja bowls better with competition coming from ashwin

That would have been the "brain fart" shot I posted this before. Whenever Ashwin controls his aggression, he scores well. When he over attacks, he scores a pretty 30 and gets out. Ashwin was trying to strokes on Anderson swinging deliveries which was stupid considering he just had to dead bat them (except the ones that stray on his pads or overpitched) and feast on the rest whom he was finding too comfortable. He didn't even leave one Anderson delivery to go past him to the keeper (as far as I remember). The very fact that he scored against him playing those deliveries is a testament to his skill. I don't want an over attacking Ashwin. I want a proper controlled aggression, calculating Ashwin. Ashwin is capable of playing both the games. When he does the latter, he truly becomes dangerous.

I doubt he can do the stonewalling job.Hes always a positive batsman who likes to play his shots.Let him play his natural game
sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 Best eg: See how Ashwin played we scored a century (with Rohit Sharma) against WI in the 1st Test. See how he scored a pretty 30 against them in the 2nd Test. One was a calculating aggressive Ashwin. Other was an over aggressive Ashwin (got out playing a hook shot).
sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 I doubt he can do the stonewalling job.Hes always a positive batsman who likes to play his shots.Let him play his natural game I didn't ask him to go to the opposite spectrum. Ashwin likes to play his shots. He could have played other bowlers more freely and just looked to play Anderson's tough swing balls with a straight bat (except for the ones that are bad deliveries). Any other day, he would have been out and I know for a fact that he can survive those tough Anderson deliveries when playing proper defense shots. See my above post.

When you see him dance down the wicket and miss one then it is a brain fart. When he gives room and tries to play an extravagant shot. But when one tries to play pull off a short ball that didn't get up. That is not a brain fart. Only problem was a normally good timer of all shots was done in by the slowness of the ball. SO execution went awry. That was not an extravagant shot in my book. Much like how Rahane mistimed a short ball in the 3rd test against Moeen.
vvvslaxman Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 IN conditions where ball moves extravagantly defending too much will eventually lead to downfall.

Much like how Rahane mistimed a short ball in the 3rd test against Moeen. I won't call it a brainfart but he could have guided it for a single with a vertical bat in his sleep. I do see your point. He committed to a shot and since the ball didn't rise, he adjusted and it didn't go right. I just think that being a compulsive hooker, he need not go for such shots. He has so many scoring shots, so cutting this out just eliminates a major way of getting out. Considering Ashwin's history with that kinda shots, the dismissal will be viewed in a different way.
