New Delhi: Aug 31, 2014 Cheteshwar Pujara will be playing for Derbyshire this season while Varun Aaron is also keen on plying his trade in the county circuit but Ishant Sharma, the senior-most bowler of the Indian Test team is not at all keen on playing in England. When asked whether he would want to play county cricket, “No, I am not interested,†was a curt reply from the lanky pacer, who was not allowed to give an elaborate answer by the organisers of the event, at a promotional function relating to bikes, in New Delhi on Sunday. One of the heroes of India’s Lord’s Test win, Ishant was asked which among Lord’s (2014) and Perth (2008) was a more satisfying effort according to him, there was another terse reply with any elaboration. “There can’t be any comparisons between the two performances.†While the 25-year-old, who has 178 wickets from 58 Test matches was keen on answering a few questions, a member of the organising team was constantly stopping him from answering cricket-related queries. How disappointed was he after being thrashed by England in the Test series, the seamer replied, “No team wants to lose a contest. We played hard enough but they played better cricket than us.†When someone sneaked in a question about how “cool†Dhoni is on the field, Ishant said, “You guys have seen him (Dhoni). He remains pretty relaxed.â€

If he isn't playing ODIs and T20s, not sure why he wouldn't want to gain some county experience? Maybe its too late to be involved in this season, but his response seems to suggest he isn't looking to play in the coming seasons either. Maybe after his Lord's performance he thinks he has learnt all there is to fast bowling? At 25, Ishant still has quite a few years of cricket left in him and this would be the optimal point in his career to gain useful experience in foreign conditions.

Also it is an excellent platform for international cricketers to hone their skills in foreign conditions. If he chooses to play in SAF or AUS instead, great, but that is going to be more difficult. There is no "fascination" with county cricket, but where else are these guys going to get experience of first-class cricket in foreign conditions? Both Zaheer and Srinath played county cricket and admitted to becoming vastly improved bowlers after the experience. So fast bowlers can definitely benefit from it.

He's just recuperating from an injury. Obviously he is contracted and BCCI wouldn't want him to be again injured. County cricket isn't an easy routine. There are matches every other day and plenty of travel. Not really ideal for someone who's coming off an injury and is looking forward to more competitive cricket shortly. Srinath did county run long back when scenario was completely different. Zak did it when he was not in the international team. There is a HUGE difference.
