kubrickian Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 test cricket will definitely survive,rather more people will gain interest in test matches because t20s and odis are too common nowadays.come 5 years from now,no.of people watching test cricket will be up by manifolds.the strong boards like england,aus wont let that happen even bcci wont do that i am sure all three formats will survive and gain even more popularity at least till i live Audience for test cricket has grown over the years in India otherwise India wouldn't be playing these 4 test series against England or Australia, both home and away. But it remains to be seen if this interest will be sustained with the popularity of T20 and lack of good contests, at home with India being dominant and overseas with India being poor. Also as more cricket fans get retired, they will have more time to watch test cricket in coming years. So that could be a positive.

I mean...having fans in the stadium make those Test match exciting (mostly) and makes fans stick on their TV for the duration of the games...but IMO...boards around the world don't care anymore about that ie if there are spectators in the ground to watch the Test match. Test matches are used to sell LIVE cricket to TV in a package deal that includes the exciting & highly profitable ODIs and T20. Test matches will continue as long as those TV deals work and Test matches cost can be minimized for maximum profits. The day TV companies decides that their revenue itself is not getting the money...will start the end of Test cricket. Already Test viewership is down....but still those companies fill the screen with LIVE Cricket coverage...& Test cricket is providing those coverage cheap ATM. The question is for how long

Why not have a new ball given to the fielding team every 30 overs? This would mean that almost every test will lead to a result, runs will be as valuable as gold dust. All 4 innings will be completed. Both teams will always be in a position to win the game given the opportunities a new ball will give. Runs will need to be scored quickly between overs 15-30.\ Test match cricket will be forever. I am giving myself a clap on the back this really is a brilliant idea.:two_thumbs_up:

You are basically negating those skills entirely. In any case, most tests have been producing results of late both in India and abroad. I don't there need to be any changes to produce more results. What's more important is to make test matches more competitive. You need to improve the quality of pitches and prepare wickets which have something for everyone and players should be able to adjust to different conditions, perhaps by playing domestic cricket in different countries and test matches in foreign conditions more often. Better matched sides produce better contests.

The question is for how long Err... that's what is the case, it's like a bonus thing, the main attraction being the ODIs and T20s... Test cricket coverage, by all means, is no way "cheaper" as compared to ODI costs.

moniker Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 The enjoyment attained through watching ODI cricket seems so momentary.. I had almost already forgotten Raina's century in the 2nd ODI until I remembered after reading about it somewhere, but I still remember Rahane's century at Lord's and Bhuvi's performances with bat and ball in the first couple of tests although they took place more than a month ago.
