Greg Chappell’s association with India’s cricketers has been one of unease. Incidents of bust-ups with seniors marred his two-year stint as national coach from 2005. In fact, in 2009, the former Australia captain severed ties with Indian cricket. On Thursday, he was back for what could be called a third stint. Former India pacer Irfan Pathan, one of the few who had a good equation with Chappell, said there was a negative perception about the Aussie great in the Indian media, but he had a good relationship with him and many other players. “I got to learn a lot from him. He has great insight into the skill of coaching and training youngsters. He has been misunderstood in the past and I feel he has a lot to offer to Indian cricket,” said Irfan, who announced the launch of his training centre, Cricket Academy of Pathans here, with brother Yusuf and Chappell. Under Chappell, India were ousted from the 2007 World Cup in the group stage, following which he quit. He will mentor coaches and design the programme at the academy, which will start functioning in Baroda in October. “In the time spent in India, I have come to understand a fair bit of how Indian cricketers operate. I intend to use this experience.”

If you look at it on face-value, its a nice initiative. As for Greg Chappell being the mentor, I have always believed he is the right man to discipline a bunch of manipulative thugs our cricketers are.

Greg Chappell is ideally the right man for coaching youngsters, U-15, U-19 teams rather than a senior team because his mindset is different from the way we do things in India. His method did not work for senior team because they have grown with their own way of training, discipline, way of thinking etc. But he can mold youngsters much better because their habits can change at that age.
