In March, Muttiah Muralitharan had been named as Bengal's spin bowling consultant. "Over the period of next year, I'll be coming here for at least 30 days. We'll work out what's best for myself as well as the youngsters," Laxman told reporters at the Eden Gardens. "The ultimate aim for a batsman is to score runs. Run making is also a technique along with the skill. I'm looking forward to contribute." Laxman said he was working with Bengal mainly due to Sourav Ganguly, who is currently joint secretary of the CAB. "It's because of him that I'm here. He persuaded me to take up this role. Really excited to see the young talents on display." Ganguly said that Laxman will be working with Bengal players at all levels. "He's here for the Vision 2020 not for the senior (Ranji) side," Ganguly said. "Ashok Malhotra is there for the senior team. Everybody who's there with the senior team are also associated with Vision 2020. Laxman is for the development of players of Bengal.". Does this mean He won't do commentary anymore? :woot:

Kalia_Test Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 VVS is one of the nicest blokes you can meet...I had the fortune of meeting him a few times here in Hyd and he is so humble and down to earth... I might be ruffling a few feathers here but VVS should have been our No.3 and not No.5....he would have averaged 50+ for sure and lot more hundreds...so many innings, he was so comfortable and looked at ease to go to 100 but had to bat with tail and they turned out to be 30s or 50s... When conditions were favourable for batting, others cashed in and he rarely got to feast as big... No real regrets though - Dravid was also a good No.3 but IMO, he would not have been as successful a No.5 as VVS

Rather people noticed that he existed too when in times of need... Good times say 50% - His 30s and 60s never got attention...failed a few times too as score was already good and he had to really go for runs aggressively Bad times - 50% 25% - He could not score too 25% - He scored and people remembered the memorable knocks My only point is...in the first 50%, if he was at no.3 ( which was a natural position for him ), his record would have been much much better... As I said earlier, he was the one that could atleast adapt and play memorable knocks down the order, which was good for Indian cricket....The other option was swapping Dravid and VVS...and Dravid would not have been a good no.5...he never had the game for it
Precambrian Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 wouldn't help much imho. because laxman is someone who is a born genius. You can't just teach something like that to young players. And a number of anecdotes about him by other players suggest he was lazy off field. Used to sleep in the dressing room even when the team was facing a stiff target. A Rahul Dravid or a Sachin Tendulkar would be the best bet for their sheer dedicaion and hardwork for the long haul. VVS was closer to Lara than a Dravid. Murali is a good signing. Dude is amazing.
