Shows Gavaskar is a cricket fan, like the rest of us. Cricketers are themselves, fan too. Before the match it is obvious that India should have looked for a win. But at some point on the 5th day when victory appeared improbable (like after the fall of Rahane) they could have gone for a draw, if they wished. Batting out 25 overs isn't a tough thing, but chasing 120 in 25 overs with six wickets in hand was a tough and risky task.

In 2008, he was dropped following a poor run in Srilanka, but after that he never got a chance. So basically, he was eliminated after one poor showing in Srilanka. Any opportunities he had after that were sporadic and limited to one or two well spaced out matches an year, hardly enough for any batsman to settle in and prove his worth. After 2008, DK did not get two tests in a row any time, and it is not surprising that he faded away. The fact is DK was good in SA and England - He would have done better than Dhoni away from India if he had been given the opportunity. Dhoni, of course is a much better batsman at home - DK can never dream of the double ton that Dhoni conjured against Australia.

I actually think that if Saha can learn from this blunder he can be a good prospect for India. His wicket keeping looked good (one missed stumping but that can happen to anyone) and he looked assured in his batting, got a bad call in the first innings. IMO he actually deserves to get more chances.

Gavaskar is a pesky little man. Was always selfish in his playing days and now plays both sides as a pundit. Hope the loss of this test doesn't diminish Virat's drive to win. Unfortunately, the cancer is coming back and he'll gladly take draws for the rest of the series.
