Gilchrist averaged 47+ batting at no.7. MSD's talent is in no way inferior to Gilchrist. If he were serious about tests he could have averaged atleast 45.

Rohit, Dhawan and even Pujara have done worse. Rohit has been dropped. Dhawan should be dropped. Almost all fans barring diehard ones want them removed from our team. Only Pujara seems to have long term promise. Even he is under a lot of pressure and being criticized. The problem with Dhoni.is that he cannot be removed even if he deserves to.

Add to that the fact that he bats at no.7 where it is easier to pass off weaker technique stroke players. Also, Gilchrist's foot movement was not that good. If MSD was more serious about tests, he. could have done much better.

I can forgive technical flaws if he is playing aggressively. The way he got out was a weird poke for a ball outside off. Even if he middled it, it would have just gone to gully. I don't know what he was hoping to achieve. It seemed like a very ODI / T20 shot to play (the run down to 3rd man) This is his 90th Test match. Some situational awareness would have been nice.

All his runs come in dead situation without even threatening the outcome of the match, forget about actually changing. India has won only one test outside subcontinent where his contribution was 1 and 19. Most of the time, he helps himself to a 50 or so when match outcome is already sealed or pressure is off. There is no purpose in many of those 50's which he scores. For example a 30 -40 today would really have been valuable today but once again fell woefully short.
