I think he got a 7-fer in the 1st innings. Much better than Maxwell, Doherty, etc in that series. Lyon's overall career avg is not as good as Ashwin or even Sir Jaddu, but I'd back him over both these 2 bowlers on unhelpful tracks.

Spitting and turning square. Doherty is quiet a lame bowler and Maxwell rarely pitches it on the surface. He was throwing full tosses- 5 an over. Clarke would have been good there. But again, other surfaces where Ashwin and Jadeja fared well, Lyon struggled. Sucked in UAE too. He knows how to bowl in these surfaces and usually our batsmen have played poor shots.

cowboysfan Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 easy answer-he is actually better test bowler than any spinner we have right now.the dearth of spin talent has to be the biggest weakness of our team.we can roll over most teams at home because they dont play spin well but our spinners have no clue on how(or whereto bowl on flatter ,bouncier pitches.

Just look at the highest wicket takers in the Ranji Trophy for the last 3 years or so. You will find the list dominated by seam bowlers. It looks like the BCCI policy of producing green tracks is not really paying off. On the one hand we are getting more decisive results in Ranji matches (which is good), but we now have seam bowlers who do not know how to bowl on flat tracks. And we don't have any spinners whatsoever. I still think our best spinner for conditions that you find in Australia would have been Amit Mishra.

A classic example is Gopal, one of the most promising spinners, being ruined in the Kar team and slowly becoming a lower middle roder bat and part-time spinner.

Even Harbhajan wasn't that kind of bowler and hence he too struggled away from home. I remember we used to have a spin bowler called Sarandeep Singh. He played some Tests in India. He was the kind of bowler who was possibly more suited to playing in conditions outside India. But Harbhajan being the first choice offie then, he never got that chance.

A batsman who could bowl. But since his bowling came good in Ranji, he was started to be seen as a bowler.

This season, he has hardly ever bowled. I don't want him to become a batsman again - we have too contenders already. If he tries to go the route of an allrounder, he might risk becoming second rate in both areas.

Unfortunately, he didn't get picked after playing only a few Tests (in which he actually did pretty well)

zep1706 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 One must also remember that the best pitch for an off spinner in this series was Adelaide and we did not have one in that match.
