Marut Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Windies 83 was one of the strongest team to have played the WC - they were at the peak of their prowess. Even in 83, they crushed every other team except India, who managed to beat them twice in three games. To those who think the Indian win was a fluke, they need to reflect on the two Indian wins - India did not just have one lucky final. The interesting thing about the WI team was, they did not have a genuine all rounder, they did not need one!

They did not have to play their first two matches against Aus and WI, which gave them a free ride and pressure free ride into QF.

But Aus was *****ing in their pants agains us in 97/98 era when they played in SL. India won at England, an unfamiliar terrain against the greatest team ever. SC conditions aren't alien territory for Srilanka, infact that 1996 SL team would not have won outside the SC.

The bowlers of that WI team playing in 83 WC were Roberts, Garner, Marshall, Holding and batsmen were Greenidge, Haynes, Lloyd and King Viv. But still India beat them twice not only in Final but also in League Match and both the matches India won while defending the target.:two_thumbs_up:

Yeah, we beat WI in a best of three contest. It was no fluke, but it appears the WI were a bit complacent. Since they were complacent twice, they surely deserved to lose.

Harsh Thakor Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 Marut,Viv Richards was marginally a better batsmen in 1979 than in 83 while Roberts and Holding were quicker and more devastating in 1979.Alvin Kalicharn too was an asset in 1979.Garner was better in 1979-Tht is why 79 team is placed ahead.

Harsh Thakor Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 To me with a bit of luck Pakistan could have won in 75,79 and 87 with better teams than in 92.If they had consolidated their winning positions they would have won in 75 and 79 while in 87 they were the best team but lost the semi-final to a better team on the day.In 1999 man -to -man Pakistan had their best team the most talented of all the tournament.

I'd be backing Australia's 03 team over any of the the windies teams, Windies were a great side but they had weaknesses, their wkt keeper wasn't fit to lick Gilchrists bootlaces as a batsman and they had chinks in their batting armoury IMO, Apart from Their openers and Viv and Lloyd their batting wasn't great, Gus Logie getting a game proves that. Bowling was a strengh but no specialist spinner goes against them, and they would really struggle with over rates, I feel Australia's bowling depth would give them the edge. Fielding was on par with the Australians.
Number Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 India made it to SF in 1987 WC.Where did SL finish in 99? Also 2 years later in 1985 India also won B&H world series in Australia. Which is Champions Trophy equivalent and more competitive than world cup. However I won't totally disagree with Thongale. In SC conditions SL 1996 will definitely beat India of 1983 as India lacks a good spinner.
