I am puzzled how Kapil's 175 is leading Sachin by a ratio of more than 2:1. Not that I think Sachin's innings was actually greater, but I presume a lot of members are in their late teens to late 20s demographic and I wonder how many of them were even alive to watch Kapil play that innings... and if you didnt watch something live, how could you claim to have the context you need to judge? (Please dont give me 'Well, i saw the recorded highlights on tv'..there's nothing like being in the moment, experiencing the ebbs and flows of a live event..) To me personally - its a total no contest. Sachin's knock at Centurion was as close to an out-of-body sports watching experience as I could ever have in my life. Just the circumstance of that game - The India pakistan rivalry, the world cup stage, the way he counter attacked - made that the single most exhilarating 2 hr sports watching experience of my life.

There was a poster earlier who claimed to have a video recording of the innings but proved to be a fraud. For me, Steve Waugh's 120 in the 99 WC. The situations were all stacked against them, lost 2-3 wickets and a daunting score to chase against a formidable bowling attack. The way he counter attacked and won his team the match and practically the next match too(it being a tie) demonstrates the importance of the knock. It also began th dominance of the Oz team under Steve Waugh which became arguably the best side ever.

Technically the 2nd best world cup innings was Sachin's 98 at Centurion.Kapil's 175 is rated better or Steve Waugh's 120 because of the circumstances.From a point of view of domination Sachin's was right there,arguable from an aesthetic point of view the best.

I did read the desciption but wrote the comment bluntly. Apologies for that! And for me the Steve Waugh inning is the best for reasons I stated. Anyways, all these inings are so close in terms of quality that the ratings just become a matter of personal choices..

Surely it has to be an innings in the final for 3 reasons. 1: it's when the most pressure to perform is on. 2: minnow teams don't make the final so 'bullies' can't cash in. 3: you're playing against either the no1 or 2 best team in the world.
