Before the Ganguly-Dravid era this was the case in every indian match. For most of the 90s Indian Batting = Sachin.

Obviously you have not watched it as well. Jayasuriya bowled over the wicket to the right handers, not round the wicket, and never bowled a single dart. Every thing was flighted left arm spin which spun miles. Ashish Kapoor, Sachin, Kumble, Dharmasena or De Silva never got much spin out of it. It was only Murali and Jayasuriya spun it square.

SAF were favorites. But they had an obvious weakness against spin. It took a brilliant century from Lara to de rail them, but I think capitulating against WI spin (was it Adams?) was a massive lol.

Pak and SA were the favorites. Ind and Aus were outside contenders. Hardly anybody expected SL to win. They were still considered *almost minnows* until then. The World Cup win changed the perception about them and since then, they have been a cricketing power to reckon with.

Muralitharan with his double jointed wrists, and chucking could spin the ball on basically any track. Jayasuriya would take advantage of his bowlers and the other bowlers completely roughing up the pitch to get spin from outside the leg stump.

Even though I didn't have extremely great knowledge of Cricket then, I remember Windies lost to Kenya way early in the group stage and no one really was expecting much from Windies other than usual appearance in the quarter final. South Africa was the most feared team right from the start as they were very competitive right through till the world cup.

No they were not .I think wi lost to Kenya a minnow at that time. They were all out for 90 I think. Wi cricket started falling in to crisis during that time . Their captain riche richardson was a good odi player but he hardly had any support may be there were in fighting in team. They played really well against south Africa because it was more of black vs white after the apretheid in SA.

Firstly Jaysuriya only bowled this line against India. He was a defensive bowler and a death bowler. He bowled round the wicket darts during 96 WC. Second one is another lol worthy statement. Murali has not chucked, and it's proven. Secondly, Jayasuriya never spun it to pitch it wide outside leg as Warne do. Almost all the balls pitched on danger area, and it was dip, drift, pace and bounce that defeated Indian batting, not extravegant turn as in Murali's case. Infact Ashish Kapoor and Tendulkar turned the ball more than Jayasuriya, but Jayasuriya was spinning it at a pace of 95k rather than 85k.
