gakgupta Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Were Wi real favorites around that time for the world cup? I was young to understand all this at that point of time. My uncle told me that, if not for a umpire mistake, WI would have made it into finals and would have won it too...
BeautifulGame Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 From what I remember Pakistan and SA were the favourites . And yes there were couple of contentious decisions in the Mohali semi against WI tail so maybe they would have qualified for the final
zen Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 No .... more like dark horses. lost to Kenya or one of such teams iirc
BeautifulGame Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 No .... more like dark horses. lost to Kenya or one of such teams iirc Lost to Kenya and then beat Aus to qualify . Were hammered by us as well but then knocked out the favourites SA lol
CSK Fan Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Man, we could have won this one so easily. At home, with crowd behind us. If ONLY we had batted first, no way SL would have chased on that minefield. And we could have easily defeated Aus in final. opportunity lost

We never had the attack to contain Srl if we batted first .They were insane chasers during that period. Also as Sachin showed it wasnt as bad a minefield as our batsmen made it look against Jayasuriya

Lost that cup due to the illogical decision to bowl first.
vvs_Sree Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 west indies beat aus in group stage. they had great players like lara, chanderpaul, bishop, ambrose & walsh..

Also as Sachin showed it wasnt as bad a minefield as our batsmen made it look against Jayasuriya Pitch was supposed to crumble as the match went on. Jayasuriya was turning the ball like warne. Everyone was talking about batting first. Also, SRT and Sidhu started against pacers, but as soon as spinners came on, it was a different game altogether.
Sonix768 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 If I remember correctly, in the semi finals, Richie Richardson hit one shot at the ending stage which had 4 written all over it only to be intercepted by the Square Leg umpire (he took a bad hit on his ear). That proved costly at the end.

Also as Sachin showed it wasnt as bad a minefield as our batsmen made it look against Jayasuriya The pitch was spinning miles. SRT had the class to withstand it. By the time 20 overs were over, the pitch was unplayable. Every Sri Lankan part timer started to bowl and spinned miles
Sidhoni Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 MTC going :offtopic: Sachin Sachin  you weren't even born then :headshake:

If Lanka were chasing don't think our spinners like Kapoor or Sachin would have done much against De Silva or Ranatunga and unlikely to panic like us
G_B_ Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Pakistan were seen as the favs. WI had a poor 1992 WC by their own high standards and were seen as a force in relative decline. I think in 1996 nobody could have forecasted WI slip this much though. Especially in test cricket. In retrospect they barely have a population of 6-8 million and once cricket became professional plus the advantage American sports brought it was always going to be hard for them. In their defence though, they did win the champions trophy in 2004 and the T20 WC in 2012 so they do have a knack of picking up trophies in the limited overs.
CSK Fan Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Jayasuriya did major damage particularly round the stumps  Our panic didn't help either sending Srinath ahead of Jadeja and him running like maniac utter chaos. If Lanka were chasing don't think our spinners like Kapoor or Sachin would have done much against De Silva or Ranatunga and unlikely to panic like us Clearly you didn't watch it. Jayasuriya's some balls were turning square, so the straighter ones on the stumps were a 100 times more deadly And you also completely ignore the fact that even Dharamsena and De Silva were unplayable.
