Malcolm Merlyn Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Jagmohan Dalmiya is set to return as the BCCI president, more than a decade after he last held that position. The former BCCI and ICC president has emerged as a consensus candidate between the two rival factions of the Board, led by the sidelined incumbent N Srinivasan, and the former BCCI and ICC president Sharad Pawar. Both Srinivasan and Pawar have been claiming Dalmiya as their candidate for the election, due to take place on Monday in Chennai. Dalmiya, who is president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, filed his nomination papers with support from his own association, the National Cricket Club in Kolkata and the four other east zone associations. The deadline for filing nominations for the election is 3pm on March 1. Nominations for other posts Vice-presidents Pawar group Ravi Savant, Jyotiraditya Scindia, MP Pandove Srinivasan group G Gangaraju, TC Mathew, CK Khanna, Gautam Roy, ML Nehru Since it is the east zone's turn to nominate the president for the three-year term, Dalmiya wanted to ensure that a candidate from the zone - rather than an outsider parachuting in - held the post. He had been approached by Pawar's faction to contest as a candidate from their group, while Srinivasan's group had asked him to pick between the post of president and "chief patron", a position that doesn't currently exist in the BCCI. Srinivasan was barred by India's Supreme Court from taking part in the elections other than casting his vote, when required, as a nominee of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. The election itself has been twice deferred because of the board's involvement in the corruption case currently being heard in the Supreme Court. There could be an election for the remaining three principal office bearers' posts. The Pawar group has nominated Anurag Thakur for secretary, Rajiv Shukla for treasurer and Chetan Desai for the post of joint secretary. The Srinivasan camp have nominated Sanjay Patel, Anirudh Chaudhry and Amitabh Chaudhary for the posts of secretary, treasurer and joint secretary, respectively. The nomination forms have been submitted and will be scrutinized. Dalmiya has 3 years to form his base and get his power back.And the President of Bcci will have the power no matter what.The next President 3 yrs down the line would be from north and i expect Anirudh Thakur to take that chair.

Its not going to be easy with so many BJP people. Ultimately the BCCI is becoming the BJP. But i am happy that Pawar has been kept out. No doubt he will have power. But not the sort of absolute power Srini enjoyed for a few years. There will be checks and balances.

The equations of BCCI politics is different.Thats why you see a Thakur and a Shukla standing together.And a Anirudh Chaudhury standing againist them.I am pretty sure that Thakur and Shukla will win their posts. It seems East zone has pretty much thrown its weight behind Dalmiya and once he assumes Presidency the fence sitters will flock by his side,thats the power of the chair. Remember in 2005 Pawar won the election with a thumping majority and it was Pawar whose political power made sure that the Dalmiya nominee lost the election(There was a whip issued by Soniaji to every congress leader associated with BCCI to vote for Pawar,thats why even Dalmiya loyalists like Assam/Tripura/Railways/Services/Universities voted for Pawar,turning a 16-15 defeat on 2004 to a 11-20 win.For next 6 years he and his loyalist Manohar ruled BCCI but the moment Srini came to power he made such a strangle hold over the members that it took the Supreme court to throw him out.Its all about the chair. Let me tell you a few interesting things, Anurag Thakur the HPCA Secretary was a Dalmiya supporter in 2005 and was to vote for his faction in the election in 2005,but Pawar with the help of the then HP CM sent another nominee for the election with a government authorisation and that guy voted for Pawar. Amitabh Choudhury the JSCA President voted for Dalmiya faction and Pawar had tried his utter best to try and bar Amitabh from voting. Brijesh Patel the Present KSCA President had fought the election from Dalmiya side and lost. Once Dalmiya gets back the chair his old allies will be back with him,hoping to get the favours. And then he has the old card of playing Pawar and Srini againist each other in the board to get what he wants. In 2005 it was believed that Dalmiya is finished.He was banned by BCCI like Modi even had to leave CAB for a year,but he played his cards correctly to once again be the most powerful man in world cricket.
