He lasted two years at the helms at what some would call ‘the most difficult job in the world’. During this period Shoaib Malik led Pakistan in 36 ODI’s managing to win 24 of them, with a W/L ratio of 2.000 which is the best in Pakistan cricket history, beating Imran Khan (1.27), Misbah ul-Haq(1.10), Inzamam ul-Haq(1.54) & finally Shahid Afridi(1.05). As well as this, under Malik’s tenure the average batting run rate stands at 5.47, the highest recorded under any Pakistan captain. These statistics were recorded during 2007-2009 where fielding restrictions weren’t as favourable to batting as they are now. Back then 300 was a rare total yet despite this Pakistan recorded 300+ on 7 times. This is in contrast to Misbahs captaincy whereby 300+ has only been achieved 5 times. It is clear he enjoys the extra responsibility. His figures take a drastic improvement when given the captaincy. An average of 43 with a strike rate close to 90 is a remarkable achievement. Positive cricket is the need of the hour. The current Pakistan team look negative, timid and over cautious, a far contrast from the teams of previous eras. I am a firm believer in letting the players express them selves through being natural and expressive. I am confident that under Maliks captaincy we will see a return to the aggressive brand of cricket Pakistan was previously associated with. If you are ever in doubt of Maliks captaincy capabilities look back to how he single-handedly transformed the Sialkot Stallions into a World-class team. Between 2005-2010, the Stallions won 5 consecutive t20 cups with an unbelievable 25 game winning streak, a World record for a top-level t20 competition. They are now the most successful team in Pakistan t20 history. The middle overs of both innings are currently the problem in Pakistan cricket. The lack of strike rotation in the middle overs has constantly hurt us. It seems to be either block or boundary. With Malik we have somebody who is quick on his feet and looks to hit the gaps. The key to building an innings in an ODI is strike rotation. To chase down 300+ totals you need to be calculative and understand the situation. Currently I see no cricketer in Pakistan who fits this mould bar Shoaib Malik. As well as this it seems opposition batsman are given a free ride into settling in through easy singles. Once a wicket is taken in the middle overs a slip must always be employed rather then allowing an easy passage. Proactive captaincy rather then reactive is the need of the hour. Malik is a fantastic limited overs cricketer and it is no surprise he is one of the most in demand t20 cricketers in the world. Contracts in the Natwest Blast, Caribbean Premier League, and Big Bash speak volume of his popularity as a limited overs cricketer. Off-spin and fielding abilities are another valuable asset. His professionalism is what sets him apart from his peers and I think this is what has actually led to him being victimised within the Pakistan cricket team. I remember Dwayne Smith posting via Social Networking that ‘Shoaib Malik is the best overseas player and a true professional’. I am sure he is not the only one that thinks this way. The way Shoaib backs the youngsters is refreshing to see and is not something you see within Pakistan cricket. Haris Sohail is a member of the Sialkot Stallions, and is a cricketer Malik has groomed into becoming one of the best upcoming cricketers in Pakistan. I have lost count of the times Haris & Shoaib have put up match winning partnerships together to take the Stallions to victory. In 2011 I remember Malik handing over his man of the match award to Haris. It was something I’ve never seen before and must have given Haris immense amount of confidence and self-belief. Pakistan needs a positive captain. There is nobody better who fits the description then Shoaib Malik, a man who understands the modern dynamic ODI game, the best cricketing brain in Pakistan and a thorough professional.

This joker cant even make the current squad. The most fitting captain for Pak would be Wahab as he actually has some fight in him with bat or ball.

If not Maqsood, then it should be Hafeez. Younis and Hafeez are the only sane batsmen i see in the team besides Misbah. Younis is too old now. One more thing is that pakis need to get rid of Afridi. Not because he is not performing.. but because he is wrong influence on others. Most are thinking Afridi is hero even when he is not performing... then why do we need to perform.
