G_B_ Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 You are intentionally missing the point. If even one single person wants to eat cow beef' date=' is it banned or not? No the media is not the idiot here, it is people pretending to be one on this thread. It is clear to everyone that cow beef is what is meant here and the topic of discussion. What was available or what people prefer is not the point[/quote'] Cow was banned in maha a long time ago (except in special circumstances). Bullock and Bulls are the meat in question. Cow was banned by the Congress government a long time ago. Maybe you need to read up on this subject before commenting. Regardless of what you think, beef is not banned. The media are there to report the facts. The fact is that beef is not banned. By all means have titles such as "Bollocks and Bulls added to banned list". It does not matter what everyone thinks if what everyone thinks is not true.
Desi Cartman Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 ^ for clarity can you please explain if I can eat beef kebab or steak in Mumbai? Is importing allowed? After reading your post, Im a little confused
G_B_ Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 ^ for clarity can you please explain if I can eat beef kebab or steak in Mumbai? Is importing allowed? After reading your post, Im a little confused You can eat a beef kabab or steak in mumbai. It will be of water buffalo. All the major restaurants in mumbai have been making steaks from buffalo for decades. My family owns a small water buffalo farm near the city of Dhule in maharashtra and the entire village is supported by providing buffalo meat to middle men who supply it to Mumbai and Surat. This ban changes jack in mumbai. The bulk of the cow slaughter (mostly illegal) and bullock and bull was meant for export to middle eastern countries. No idea on imports, need to read the fine print.
ravishingravi Posted March 17, 2015 Author Posted March 17, 2015 ^ this is correct. Cow beef was never available in Mumbai in first place.
G_B_ Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 the only reason a lot of people in the minority are complaining especially in mumbai cause they used to slaughter cows (which was illegal a long way back) and then claim they were bullocks or bulls. What this ban does is eliminate any doubt as buffalo meat has a substantially different texture than that of cow/bull. The Sena government in 1995 (this was a Raj Thakarey idea) called their bluff. The BJP government followed it through with the president under pressure from the RSS. and i got news for the people of mumbai , a big % of your milk is buffalo milk. The city of mumbai and surat primarily runs on buffaloes.
Desi Cartman Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Here is an issue with not slaughtering the bulls, dont we need more cows for milk and very few bulls? How do they plan to manage this issue?

Yoda-esque Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 ok' date=' so basically nothing has changed?[/quote'] This should answer your question http://www.firstpost.com/india/the-misdirected-outrage-over-beefban-calm-down-you-werent-eating-it-anyway-2132875.html

Buffalo milk is the way forward...obviously i am going to hold my hand up and say i am a bit biased due to my ancestral affinity to the animal. But i believe some 80% of beef in Pakistan too is water buffalo as well. More than the cow the buffalo has played an important economic role in the history of India.
Desi Cartman Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Thanks. So 2 issues with it 1. The govt might have to buy the bulls 2. Why ban import
G_B_ Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Thanks. So 2 issues with it 1. The govt might have to buy the bulls 2. Why ban import 2. Cause sometimes Indian cows/bulls/bullocks are marched across the border. slaughtered and sold back to India. Its happening with the BD border. The same thing can happen. Indian cows/bulls/bollocks might be exported (though even that is difficult) slaughtered and sold back to India. After the practical experiences of certain communities masking cow meat with bull/bullock meat the government of Maha does not want to take any chances. 1. The government of maharashtra will do. I noticed even Haryana has a buy back scheme. It is designed in some part to put money back into the farmers pockets.

G_B_ Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 And what does the govt do with these bulls then? takes care of them.... In my village older buffalo who cannot be sold and dont provide milk are put out to pasture on pieces of lands where grass grows to prepare them for cultivation. Dung is another important component which can be used in fertilizer and fuel. So suppose you have two fields. You shift your cattle around to make the most of it. They are not totall unproductive. Once they die they are burnt alive or their meat is distributed. Other uses are as labour in ploughing fields and transport.

Like for ploughing and transport, we are and should be moving to modern means. For fertilizer and fuel, the milk producing cows can be used. Above all, should the govt be in the business of running cow retirement village, shouldnt they be focusing on more important stuff? I dont have as much problem with them managing the bulls and retired cows as I have with blanket ban on all beef but I dont think govt should be taking this responsibility. Thanks to you and G_B, I have a better understanding now and I dont have to worry about not getting to eat beef kebabs on my next trip to India :fishing:

That is why this is a stupid and unnecessary legislation. MH government should concentrate on reforms and infrastructure rather than these kind of legislations. These kind of legislations are only aimed at playing to the galleries. Perhaps decades and decades of minority appeasement has sowed the seeds for some of these activities.
RedFever Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Why do people want to eat beef when you have the healthier option of goat meat available in india !
Yoda-esque Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Why do people want to eat beef when you have the healthier option of goat meat available in india ! Cheap protein is a term I have been reading the last few weeks
mishra Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Wrong Question. Beef ban is Constitutional. I has nothing to do with secularism and all. " Central Government Act Article 48 in The Constitution Of India 1949 48. Organisation of agriculture and animal husbandry The State shall endeavour to organise agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter, of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle"
Tiger80 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Why do people want to eat beef when you have the healthier option of goat meat available in india ! Goat meat is now 450 - 500 per kg. If price keep on shooting then goat will become extinct from plates. Indian govt unlike China don't care for its population to have healthy diet. China on the other hand import meats like pork and beef so that its population can be well fed despite producing them much more than India.India on the other hand don't even allow mutton to be imported from Australia/NZ
SLICKR392 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Why do people want to eat beef when you have the healthier option of goat meat available in india ! Because Mutton sucks and beef is freaking tasty.
