Then why buy the 36 rafales ? Instead order 36 GE404s and make tejas. As the article correctly points out, this is setting a wrong example to foreign suppliers. Also I dont get why the french wont give us full ToT for rafales when they gave us pretty much everyting for the scorpene subs...those cost like 1.5 billion a piece... IAF is in desperate need to get new aircraft as soon as possible. it requires at least 39 squadrons to deal with both china and oak, but we are well short of the number. i believe this deal was hurried for that purpose

It seems the immediate priority of the govt was a band aid for the dwindling squadron numbers with a proper multirole. Hopefully the older Migs can be retired soon enough. The skeptic in me thinks that HAL & Co could maybe focus better on their existing pile of projects than add yet another to the pile.

Valid questions raised by this link.. how will Dassualt deliver twice the number of planes in half the timeframe? any idea why is this mentioned as an afterthought at the end of the article?
Anil Ambani, who attended Modi's meeting with defence chief executives in Paris, reportedly held a long discussion with Dassault chief Eric Trappier. With the procurement of 36 Rafales not bound to HAL as the tender for 126 fighters was, how are new players positioning themselves to benefit from New Delhi's turnaround?

According to wikipedia cost of rafale jet is higher than usa's F35 stealth fighter jet:facepalm:. :finger: to modi and co
What US offered to us in the MRCA tender was F-18s/F-16's and not F35 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_MRCA_competition#Comparison_of_the_aircraft Just dont compare the unit cost only, compare Maximum payload/range/combat radius/maintenence costs too..both NDA/UPA went with Rafale for a certain reason
