It stated that without NSG membership in the next 1-2 years, India would have no option but to go for an indigenous nuclear energy programme. TOI was unable to ascertain if a similar 'threat' was made to the US and France, two other important partners in nuclear energy, but it's clear that the government sees Russia as the only big power which has enough influence with Beijing to soften its position on the issue of India's NSG membership+ . So either India already has capability to do it and power plants are being bought to just get NSG membership. Or Modi government is shooting on its foot by taking such stand. They will be building 4 more. Design for stage 3 - advanced heavy water reactors is ready <<< these are the thorium reactors. I figure it will take them another 10 yrs to build, validate etc. So you are probably looking at 2030 for when they start mass production. The 10 reactor order that cabinet just approved are pressurized heavy water reactors - old design that DAE has refined over the years. Such a large order is either just for job creation, signalling to NSG members that let us in or we dont but any reactors from you OR and this is a big if, our own stage 3 design build is progressing nicely.
