Modi's Government Foreign Trips & External Affairs

PMs Nepal visit and so much "frandship" appears as a long forgotten dream with the current situation in which the relationship is going down the drain and Nepal looking to move closer to China to open alternate supply routes of essential commodities...

I can see the current affairs with Nepal is being controlled from RSS HQ in Nagpur... Completely botched state of affairs...

How Nepal was lost :

THESE days, one can’t swing a dead cat in New Delhi without hitting a professionally wise person who can be relied upon to rapturously proclaim how Narendra Modi has “won” and “conquered” the West. But one is hard-pressed to find anyone who can explain how Nepal was “lost” on the Prime Minister’s watch. Nor will anyone be able to recall when it was last that Nepal chose to take its grievance against India to the United Nations. The correct answer: 1989.

....Some even suggest that the foreign missions in New Delhi have come to regard RSS’ commissar Ram Madhav as the shadow foreign minister.

Could it be that the sprawling foreign office bureaucracy is busy scheduling yoga classes rather than using its traditional tools of tradecraft to secure our core interests? Serious students of Indian foreign policy are getting concerned that the stylistic upheavals — all Modi personality centric — have left the average IFS mandarin disoriented, breathless and befuddled. It has not helped Indian diplomacy that the External Affairs Minister is perceived to not carry any weight

Mr Modi is not welcome to the UK.

Under his leadership as chief minister of Gujarat in 2002, the Gujarat government watched a pogrom of 1,000 people directed against the minority Muslim community.

There has been an escalation of rapes against women and his cabinet includes several ministers against whom criminal cases, including rape, are pending. Modi’s roots and leadership positions in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a belligerent rightwing paramilitary organisation, are well established. The RSS is known for both its misogynist and anti-minority views, and its core Hindu-rule ideology has been publicly endorsed by Modi. Politicians with RSS backgrounds dominate his cabinet and current administration.

..there has been a sustained undermining by the Modi government of some 13,000 NGOs, including Greenpeace, Amnesty International, ActionAid, Ford Foundation and others working in the areas of environmental justice and human rights. There has been consistent flouting of environmental and resource regulations to serve the interests of the large business houses that Mr Modi has gathered around himself. We urge members of the international community to call attention to Mr Modi’s human rights abuses and to hold him accountable for violations of freedom of speech and religion. For those of us who uphold human rights, Mr Modi is not welcome to the UK.

11 November 2015, London, UK – More than 200 writers including Nikita Lalwani, Henry Marsh, Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie, and Val McDermid have written an open letter to David Cameron calling on the British government to take action to safeguard freedom of expression in India.

From PM's speech in British Parliament :

In a nation connected by cell phones, Digital India is transforming the interface between Government and people.

So, Mr. Speaker, with apologies to poet T.S. Eliot, we won't let the shadow fall between the idea and reality.

Does anybody know which work of TS Elliot , PM modi was referring to ?

I have carefully avoided reading the works of english authors all my life for fear of becoming infected by the colonial mindset.

I think these foreign visits are becoming an overkill. Esp in the wake of Bihar elections, he loses credibility going on a foreign visit. Need focus on dev in India. We can't solely survive on FDI, can we?

FDI is essential for a country like India. It fills money deficits, brings tech, bring jobs all of which most countries want. Modi is doing a fantastic job marketing India , meeting bigwigs, bringing FDI. He should tour abroad whenever necessary w/o paying attention to election results or to the haters.

^ but whenever Modi is abroad, Congress finds some chamchas to protest... today for example a relatively unknown sculptor compares Modi govt to Taliban, leaves a very bad taste.

ps: I know it works both ways when Modi targets previous govt during his foreign visits, but this is bit too stretched ..Hope every Indian supports our PM when he is trying something
