Jersey #10 Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I literally have about 30 packs of maggi in the pantry. What should I do? Is lead in noodles, spice pack or both? It's a "Product of India" and manufactured somewhere in New Delhi. safe or not safe?
Brainfade Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 I am not sure . I don't know if dietary glutamate results in excitotoxicity . but i would like the labeling to be clear and Not be misleading and enable consumers to make choices on their own . All proteins contain glutamate. 5 - 20% of any given protein is glutamate. So, if you consumed 100 g of protein a day, you would be getting between 5 - 20 g of glutamate in your diet anyway. The average American consumes about 11 grams of glutamate per day from natural protein sources and less than 1 gram of glutamate per day from MSG. The human body creates about 50 grams of glutamate daily for use as a vital component of metabolism. MSG contains only one-third the amount of sodium as table salt (13 percent vs. 40 percent) and is used in much smaller amounts. http://www.foodinsight.org/Everything_You_Need_To_Know_About_Glutamate_And_Monosodium_Glutamate#sthash.GJno4Y5E.dpuf What else would you like labeled? Every amino acid, nucleotide, monosaccharide, polysaccharide, fatty acid and dietary acid? Unless there is solid evidence of harm with an additive, labels are useless and misleading. Here's what the food label for an organic banana would look like:
Brainfade Posted June 6, 2015 Posted June 6, 2015 Am surprised no one is touching the topic of lead in ayurvedic medications. We need to ban such preparations along with banning Maggi. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22476953 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3001842/

Texan Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 What's wrong with MSG? It is suspected to be a carcinogen. But moderate quantities are perhaps not harmful. Honestly, with this whole Maggi issue, I have to say: many people tend to take Maggi as some kind of staple snack that can be consumed 2-3 times a week. I probable eat Maggi like once in 3 months or so. So, if you guys are eating Maggie every week or multiple times a week, the high Sodium content will probably kill you much before the lead toxicity will.

Brainfade Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 our own body makes glutamic acid which is an amino acid. And in much higher quantities than you can consume in your diet with/without MSG. See my post above for exact numbers. The devil is always in the details, and all these arguments should be quantitative.
Brainfade Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 It is suspected to be a carcinogen. But moderate quantities are perhaps not harmful. Ummm. ... no! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10736380 Metastudy abstract: The safety evaluation of monosodium glutamate. Walker R1, Lupien JR. Author information 1School of Biological Sciences, University of Surrey, Guildford GU2 5XH, Surrey, UK and. Food and Nutrition Division, FAO, 00100 Roma, Italy. Abstract L-Glutamic acid and its ammonium, calcium, monosodium and potassium salts were evaluated by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) in 1988. The Committee noted that intestinal and hepatic metabolism results in elevation of levels in systemic circulation only after extremely high doses given by gavage (>30mg/kg body weight). Ingestion of monosodium glutamate (MSG) was not associated with elevated levels in maternal milk, and glutamate did not readily pass the placental barrier. Human infants metabolized glutamate similarly to adults. Conventional toxicity studies using dietary administration of MSG in several species did not reveal any specific toxic or carcinogenic effects nor were there any adverse outcomes in reproduction and teratology studies. Attention was paid to central nervous system lesions produced in several species after parenteral administration of MSG or as a consequence of very high doses by gavage. Comparative studies indicated that the neonatal mouse was most sensitive to neuronal injury; older animals and other species (including primates) were less so. Blood levels of glutamate associated with lesions of the hypothalamus in the neonatal mouse were not approached in humans even after bolus doses of 10 g MSG in drinking water. Because human studies failed to confirm an involvement of MSG in "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome" or other idiosyncratic intolerance, the JECFA allocated an "acceptable daily intake (ADI) not specified" to glutamic acid and its salts. No additional risk to infants was indicated. The Scientific Committee for Food (SCF) of the European Commission reached a similar evaluation in 1991. The conclusions of a subsequent review by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) did not discount the existence of a sensitive subpopulation but otherwise concurred with the safety evaluation of JECFA and the SCF.
