England Cricket bosses open to joining Olympic Games in 2024

England cricket bosses are “open†to the prospect of their sport joining the Olympic Games in 2024. Chairman Colin Graves and chief executive Tom Harrison have held talks with members of the MCC World Cricket committee and are thought to be interested in the idea, although the ICC, cricket’s world governing body, are currently opposed. The Committee’s function is to lobby the ICC to make the changes they believe would improve the game. It has long campaigned for day-night Test cricket, which will happen later this year, when Australia take on New Zealand in Adelaide in November. A statement from the Committee read: “We urge ICC to reconsider its position and take a decision that it believes is in the best interests of the global game. This would need to be done in the next 12 months for cricket to have a chance of being included in the 2024 Olympics. “The committee heard from Colin Graves and Tom Harrison and were encouraged by their openness to this idea for cricket in the Olympics, and their commitment towards the game as a whole across the world, rather than just it England and Wales. “The committee is unanimous in its belief that every effort should be made to make cricket an Olympic sport, and urges all governing bodies around the world to get behind such a bid. “The Olympics is a fundamental opportunity for cricket – in both the men’s and women’s game – and with a global reach, such a presence would expose the game positively to new markets. “With three ICC events taking place every four-year cycle, the opportunity exists for cricket to be included in sport’s ultimate global showpiece, without detracting from its successful tournaments in traditional cricket markets. “Competing in an Olympic Games would be a huge opportunity for players, a massive boost to developing cricket nations and give much greater exposure for the sport to a new audience.â€

Would be a good move. Will help cricket to spread in non traditional countries like mine. Hope it happens. At least the 10 team World Cup should be reversed.

t20 cricket yes... thats the only format which can be carried. The problem with cricket is that it needs specialist infrastructure. I guess they could make drop in pitches in places like Aus or nz and install them in football stadiums.

and the BCCI needs to play a wise game in this case. English bosses being "open" is just another way of saying we will let the BCCI be the bad cop so we dont have to face critique. BCCI should also say yes. Its probably going to take years for them to accept cricket.

But I have never understood why BCCI is so much against the inclusion of Cricket in the Olympics . Last time when Cricket was in the Asian Games , Indian team was the only one missing from the tournament both in Men as well as Women's category. There were be two medals up for the taking in the Olympics , it will be great to see.
