Sad day for cricket. One of the best players who never played test cricket. Could have been another great allrounder of 80s. Atleast better than weakest of the 4 allrounders, that is Kapil, both in batting and bowling. Poor fellow never got chance.

There is a difference between removing dirt by batsman and completely destroying the condition of the ball with soda cap, teeth whatever means. That is another topic another day. J

If you ask me, from what I've read of him, he was a better batsman than all the other 4 all-rounders. But the worst bowler out of them. Batting: Rice > Botham > Kapil > Imran Khan > Hadlee Bowling wise: Imran > Hadlee > Kapil > Botham > Rice (Kapil had a slight advantage over Botham IMO) However I don't feel that first class cricket (no matter how competitive it is) and 3 Super Tests is enough to properly judge a player (especially without watching him significantly).

I would put Kapil marginally ahead of Botham as a batsman. Botham had marginally higher batting average(33.5 vs 31) but Kapil had a significantly higher strike rate (81 vs 60). And Kapil made tougher runs - against teams like WI and SA. Botham's legacy entirely revolves round his exploits in 1981. He always struggled with both bat and ball against the strong WI team, while Kapil seemed to relish the WI challenge.
