amiret Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Three American men are being hailed as heroes for overpowering a heavily-armed Terrorist on a train in northern France. The incident happened on the high-speed Thalys service near Arras. A 26-year-old Moroccan man was arrested at Arras station. One of the Americans said they took an AK-47 assault rifle and a handgun from the attacker as they saw him walk down the aisle of the train. They then put him in a chokehold until he was unconscious. Two of the American men who overpowered the gunman, Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos, are members of the Air Force and the National Guard respectively. They were travelling on the train from Amsterdam to Paris on Friday evening with a childhood friend, Anthony Sadler, who also helped restrain the attacker. The American men and Mr Norman were awarded medals for bravery by authorities in Arras. US President Barack Obama was among those to praise those who took action. "The president expressed his profound gratitude for the courage and quick thinking of several passengers, including US service members, who selflessly subdued the attacker," the White House said in a statement. "It is clear that their heroic actions may have prevented a far worse tragedy." French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the passengers were "particularly courageous and showed great bravery in very difficult circumstances", adding: "Without their composure we could have been confronted with a terrible incident." Ten minutes later the train stopped at Arras, where police arrested the shooter, described by French investigators as a 26-year-old from Morocco or of Moroccan origin also armed with an automatic pistol and a box cutter. "The man stopped between two carriages, fired and it made a click-click-click sound, not at all like in the films," Damien told AFP. "Then the man, who was bare-chested, returned to carriage 12 and someone in a green T-shirt, with a shaved head, saw him and jumped on him and pinned him to the ground. " That someone was American serviceman Spencer Stone . "I just looked at Spencer and said, 'Let's go!'," said Mr Skarlatos from his hotel in Arras, northern France. "Spencer got to the guy first, grabbed the guy by the neck and I grabbed the handgun, got the handgun away from the guy and threw it. "Then I grabbed the AK (assault rifle), which was at his feet, and started muzzle thumping him in the head with it." Mr Stone was cut by the attacker behind his neck and his thumb was nearly sliced off as the man was wrestled to the ground by the Americans. Mr Sadler, who also helped to subdue the suspect, said: "The gunman pulls out a boxcutter and slices Spencer a few times." He added the attacker "never said a word". Mr Skarlatos and Mr Sadler, a student at Sacramento State University, said their "heroic" friend also saved the life of another passenger, whose throat was cut. "In the aftermath, we saw that a man's throat had been split and he was bleeding profusely," Mr Sadler said. "Spencer, who has some paramedics training, just clogged up his neck so he wouldn't die. This is all in the midst of Spencer bleeding profusely himself. "It was just really heroic of him to do something like that."

PARIS—French President François Hollande paid tribute Monday to the four men who foiled an apparent terrorist attack on a high-speed train, saying their actions prevented a “massacre.” "By their courage, they saved lives," President François Hollande said. "They gave us an example of what is possible to do in these kinds of situations." The four stopped a potential massacre Friday aboard a high-speed train that had departed the Netherlands and was bound for the French capital. "Three Americans and one Englishman ... you risked your lives to defend an ideal, the ideal of liberty and freedom," Hollande said.
