Number 5 playing for India if anything he was out of position. He will be used to it. His game remains unchanged where he bats. I think he started the SA tour at number 6 and he was fine. The problem i see with Che and Rahul opening is both are similar players and our RR is going to be shot with both these two opening. Rahane in test cricket appears to be more aggressive than both of them. So IMO there needs to be the balance. Chepu is quite aggressive at times - his SR as opener in Tests is 75+ (only 4 innings of course).

The Realist Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 They are not used to playing 5 days. Too much of pyjama cricket has softened them. Yup they wilted like a dying flower in the 5 tests in England last year. Just have not got the mental capacity to play longer series.
Vijy Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Based on what I have seen of Naman Ojha, he is very good on batting friendly tracks... but he has never struck me as all that capable on more challenging pitches and opposition (even the 'A' tour to Aus had some fairly flattish pitches). His keeping is also pretty shoddy. Thus, based on how Rahul keeps, I'd choose the playing XI accordingly. If Rahul keeps efficiently, I'd like to see: 1) KL Rahul 2) Che Pu 3) Rahane 4) Kohli 5) K. Nair 6) R. Sharma 7) B. Kumar 8) R. Ashwin 9) A. Mishra 10) I. Sharma 11) U. Yadav Batting till 9 and 5 proper bowlers. Nair is also a useful part-timer.

I want to see Nair and Chepu both play... outlined a team above, but it puts too much burden on KL Rahul. Perhaps one option is to open with Jinx and Pujara and send Rahul (as keeper in the team I posited) down the order, or at No.3

Kalia_Test Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 So many injuries :banghead: Anyway, IF we win this test, then to hell with 5 bowler theory in 3rd Test - Neither Bhajji nor Binny now did much - We should go with below :- Rahul Chepu Rahane Kohli Rohit Nair Naman Ojha Ashwin Mishra Ishant Yadav Even if Rahul keeps well this innings, it is not fair to ask him to keep full time next Test ( he is doing now as there was an injury mid-match ). Test Opener keeping full-time is rare ( only Alec Stewart ever did it?) Naman Ojha is a proper wicket keeper and no mug with bat ( I have not checked stats but should be decent ). With 2 good spinners in the X1 - Ashwin and Mishra ( and part-time off-spin of Rohit if needed ), there is no need of a 5th bowler ( or so-called all-rounder Binny ). Binny can be part of 5-bowler strategy in real pace-friendly conditions - not SSC where we have the next match.

Lucky Saha had his debut as Rohit had an injury on the morning of the day he was supposed to make his Test debut and then had to wait for his chance again. Now people are claiming Rohit is 'lucky'? Even with Vijay and Saha - he was in this Test and contributed 79+34 = 113 runs ( sacrificing his wicket in 2nd innings for the team's cause when he could have easily played the tuk tuk game and remained NO ). Why would he be 'happy'? He was a certainty for 3rd Test anyway :dontknow:

I get a feeling if Rohit can contribute with the ball Kohli will drop Binny and claim Rohit is an allrounder. Not joking but Rohit had a decent record as a bowler in his Harris Shield days. Can be useless in spinning decks. Considering his batting will always be patchy he might want to focus on his bowling by sending down 10-15 overs on a regular basis.

Chepu has played 4 innings as opener in Tests and averages over 100.
