He looked like a proper keeper and catch of Mathews inspires some confidence... With the absence of SAHA, he should keep wickets for india. Well, having seen Kohli who is a risk taker, it might happen as well Yeahhhh, it will be difficult for a keeper to open in a test match. Even more so, if we bowl first.....But it's just one more Test match to go and Rahul seems like a strong kid I am not quite sure, how to activate the voting functionality here. Mods can you pls help me here Guyz ....vote for below 1) Rahul should start keeping right away in test matches 2) Rahul is not ready yet and should be given time to develop keeping. 3) He is not good enough. Test matches should be played with proper keepers. This is not one day games 4) Keeping might affect his batting. We already seen this with Irfan when batting was enforced upon him.

If he is keeping wkts then should be batting in at 5 or 6 to reduce and manage the burden . But with both Vijay and Dhawan ruled out shifting Rahul and opening with 2 non - Regular Opener (like Pujara and Nair) will be too risky. So for this test I would prefer Rahul opening and Ohja at 7. Maybe for the SA series when both Vijay and Dhawan are fit we might try Rahul as wk and bat him at 5
urbestfriend Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 No..He has talent to become good opener for India, and we dont want him to be burdened with additional responsibilities..Wicket keeping in tests is a specialized position and it needs a proper WK..Its fine if he is used for ODI here and there!

Would be better than saha anyways.... @OP Would solve all batting problems .rohit at 6,dhawan vijay rahul top 3..kholi at 4 and rahane at 5. Only thing missing is a proper allrounder. Pujara can replace any of these guys in case of injury.

Opening as a wicket keeper may be too difficult as he wouldn't get any rest in between the innings. I'm not sure how good of a wicket keeper he is either. Running a mediocre wicket keeper just to have an extra batsman may end up being costly.

Precambrian Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Farokh, Kunderan, Mongia, Deepdas Gupta all have opened for India and kept wickets. Farokh was special, and easily leads the chart for keepers who also opened, having scored over 1500 runs @ 33 opening. But he too opened only in 26 test matches, out of his career total of 46 matches. We can look at breeding Rahul as an opener/wk but the expectations from him has to be kept low then as a batsman. Anything over an average of 35 considered as a bonus. Personally believe Rahul is capable of much more than that, and he should be hence allowed to prosper as a pure test bat.

Kunderan was our best keeper-batsman... dude averaged more than 40 and was a better batsman than Engineer at that position.

Sometimes, it works opposite......Since, he knows he is in the team as keeper, that takes of the pressure while batting

Once Saha returns from injury, he should get back his place.
jusarrived Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Like I said yesterday he certainly does not look like a part time keeper . He can't open if he keeps , even if he bats @6 it's a risk , but then in certain cases we have seen keeping improve a players batting as well . Tough one
