Definition of insanity - Playing Rahane in LOIs (especially T20s)

What a bunch of impatient fellows.

Anyone knows how many ODI/T20 matches it took Rohit Sharma to become the player he is now? A LOT

It is not about stats. Rohit always had the ability to hit big and change gears. He was not consistent but he always showed that he could hit at will. He had showed that in his debut T20 game in 2007 against SA. Rahane is a good steady batsman, good technique and temperament for test cricket but does not have that hitting power and range of strokes required in T20 cricket. Also, not everything in cricket is about stats, otherwise, you dont need selectors and computer based on stats would select the team. Dravid had a great ODI and test record, but it wont make him a good T20 player.

Rahane looked great prospect when he started in England tour as opener in 2011..

He was flawless as opener in 2012 IPL..

But he is getting worse day by day now.

In IPL, he had likes of Shane Watson who could make for his low SR.

Rahane even if he starts playing well (to his potential) in T20s is not very useful to a team like India. India has long innings players like Rohit and Kohli at the top with the ability to switch gears in the later half of the innings. And then you have players like Raina, *Yuvi, Dhoni and Pandya who have the ability to score quick from ball 1. Rahane cannot add much value to that batting line up.

Rahane could be useful to a team like West Indies who do not have many long innings players (except Gayle) but have many hitters with high SR and low averages like Pollard, Bravo, Russell, Sammy etc. Rahane can provide great value to a team like West Indies by batting in the top order, consistently scoring 35 ball 40's and providing a solid base for the hitters to follow.

i agree wid u , even in odi, In t20 i really dnt see him playing in future as well

In odi also, i dnt see him holding his place for long . Manish Pandey already in. India needing a batsman who cud bowl as well thts were raina, mann, hooda comes in picture. In opening i dnt see dhawan going anywere for next 2-3 yrs. Even if he goes Players like iyer, nair, unmukt, manan vohra are coming and if one of them finds the way to play on int level it ll again become diff for rahane

His problem he doesnt make big scores  even when he is set, take Sa series throwed his wkts in 40-50 . Now his 40-50 is not a 40-50 of sehwag or yuvraj or even raina which wud be impactful . He is a run a ball player and he cud learn lot from kohli how he keep ticking runs with singles double .

He is more suited to tests and odis

Even in odis he's a liability. He can't win you a match on his own and can't get going even when's set and doesn't make his starts count. I would go with Kedar Jadhav and Manish Pandey over him in odis too. Rahane's a Test specialist just like Murali Vijay and Pujara and that's how it should be. We have enough options so why force him to be something he clearly is not?

He doesn't have the power game which is absolute must in the shorter version of the game. Classy player, alright, but classy players belong to the test arena where you need the touch, technically correct player to survive in the testing conditions. I understand Ravi and Sandeep patil pushing for a Mumbaikar in this version of the game , but hats off to Dhoni for calling a spade a spade and leaving him out of the team.

This is one the rare occasions I have liked Dhoni's judgment.

Laughable, when hacks like Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are given free passes despite a gauranteed failure every time the ball moves even a wee bit, its a joke that a solid player like Rahane always gets the short end of the stick. Rahane has provided consistent one day performances despite getting shuttled in and out of the team. T20s I don't care, its a lottery at the end of the day anyways.

Indian cricket will go the Pakistani way if we continue to favor hacks ala Afridi, just because they look good once in a while, and ignore a few genuinely technically sound players like Rahane that we have.

Nobody is saying that Rahane is not a good batsman in any format. He is one of the dependable batsman in Tests and we need his temparament and skills in Tests batting in the middle order. But, his ODI place, more so his place in the T20 side is being questioned.

Tbh, he has to prove himself in T20s and the fact that we still don't have a dependable middle order big hitter makes his place in the side all the more dubious.

Rahane, as of now, is not a very good T20 player.  Primarily because he is not very good at slogging or improvisation. It is not possible to have the desired SR of 128+ without doing either .

However, his normal cricket shots are more powerful than he gets credit for.  He has a SR of 55.5 in tests and that is not the sign of a stroke-less wonder.

Rahane can be an asset in ODis if he can bat at the top of the order. You cannot have an ODI line-up where Kohli is the only batsman who can play when the pitch does something. He cannot bat after no. 4 in ODIs though...for the same reason why he should not be in the T20I team.

In test cricket, he does not need to clear boundaries because field is attacking and there are a lot of gaps.

The proper cricket shots that Rahane plays in ODIs or tests are reasonably powerful.

His problems are he cannot slog or force the bowlers  for runs and he can't improvise effectively.
