An Asian team is ranked #1 in T20s.

Don't look too much into it. If we consistently start playing T20 matches against the top 5 teams that ranking will come down pretty fast...

The rest of the teams have been playing matches against the same teams as India, and they aren't #1. If any team has multiple overseas series arranged against top 5 teams, than the ranking will come down. 

 

Of course, T20 rankings aren't stable and change very quickly. A few months back India were ranked #7 or so. But still, it is a good achievement and shows that Asian teams (at least one) aren't too far behind.

yes, we were #7 when we played Aus and reached #1 by beating them 3-0. We have been consistently poor in T20s apart from the last 2-3 months since Aus series.

I think in starting phase of T20; pre-2010, Asian sides were better because this format required lesser technique and temperament and non-Asians specially Eng, Aus were still going with typical technique, 'class' and elegance things (first 2 World T20 finals were all-Asia that too in non-Asian conditions) but after some period, they looks like worked over it and made a strong comeback by kind of re-designing whole T20 approach e.g. power-hitting from ball-1, improvised bowling & batting; added shots techniques and using pace-variations as a weapon, controlling 'extras', lesser 'dot balls' play, playing with fearless attitude, way better fitness and fielding standards as compared to Asian sides in general and T20 specialist players selection according to conditions.

Ind is much closer in these aspects with them as compared to other Asian sides, Pakistan still playing T20 with a mindset, skills and standards of 20 year old ODIs...

All the Asian sides need to start developing a core bunch of T20 exclusive players who play very less to nothing in ODIs. You need specialists these days for every format and ODI players need not necessarily be part of T20 players. Classic example is Dhawan who is a decent ODI player and a horrible T20 player.

 

For a team like India, this will also ensure that the players are not burned out due to excessive cricket played these days.
