Agree, atm Root leads this contest.
Rahane no doubt is good, but the fact remains that Kohli is India's best batsmen, so its quite natural to compare him with Eng's best.

Root has failed in Australia and Bangladesh, but overall he is more consistent than Kohli in test format.

Root hasn't done well in Australia and New Zealand, while Kohli has failed in England. On that basis, I would go with Kohli. The main difference is that Root does very well at home, while Kohli isn't really consistent at home or in Asia. If he can improve his performances there, he would comfortably be the best batsmen in the world.

Root failed in Bangladesh too.

 

In the last few years, we have had a lot of really low scoring test matches in India and that has affected the overall averages of most Indian batsmen....while the Aussies, English, Pakistani, NZ batters have made merry in home test matches.

HippoSucks, apart from improving his performance at home, Kohli also needs to do well against the swinging ball in England. His performances in SL & WI are also not reflective of his talent; a record he would like to change in order to put himself ahead of the competition. 

As for the shorter formats, there's no competition here.

Kohli has just played a solitary Test in Ban, so for the moment we can ignore it. But, agree with your other observation.

Kohli isnt India's best  batsman in test cricket. Rahane probably edges him.

If we are talking about batting averages in the last 3 years then  Rahane has definitely been our best test batsman in the last 3 years followed by Kohli. Both of them have scored in most countries around the world.

 

Where Kohli edges other batsmen of our team is the impact factor on the day he is playing a good innings.

Sehwag also  had a great impact on his day but he still wasn't our best test batsman.

Which is what  I am saying....and hence the stats.  Rahane has been our best test batsman.  Kohli has been our second best test batsman and scores the best on  impact factor on the day he plays well.

A comparison since Rahane's debut makes it evident that Rahane has a slight edge at home, but overseas, Kohli is ahead. Overall, Kohli is ahead, though the margin is not much.

Scored a ton there though IIRC.Even in England he averages 35 odd

 

Compared to Kohli,he has a better allround record
