In such a long period in politics and in states like TN which have incumbency issues with wild swings, thats bound to happen. In 1991 she swept to power in a big way. Does that mean DMK were terrible in governance? DMK got 0 seats in 2014.

No it was because Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on the eve of election and Congress were in alliance with ADMK. If u want an example if DMK being hammered due to poor governance ,it was in 2011 . 2001 and 2006 assembly elections were mostly decided by the strong alliances
BeautifulGame
@G_B_ To sum it up GB, Karunanithi was a politician(After 89 mainly) who feared consequences so he always preferred to maintain status quo .Only exception was in 2006 when he the likes of Alagiri and Kanimozhi run riot But Jaya always had the courage to see through whatever decision see made whether good or bad . That's why Karunanithi could never get reelected .Whereas with Amma , when she was bad she was routed (like in 96) and reelected when governance was good 2016 . Karuna never had her lows neither the highs Jayalalitha had as a politician . G_B_
randomGuy
RIP. Thankfully not many people lost lives due to shock. Well managed by authorities. Panhandle
I cant understand when people say "Jaya did this, she did that", "Gave bunch of free stuff" etc. She is not doling out her money for this charity. She is using our money to give away these freebies and getting all the accolades. This is what the government should do, she did not do any thing extraordinary. I hope freebie culture in TN dies off and we start electing people based on their qualification to make good policies which will benefit the general population. We seem to set the bar too low for our politicians. We are ok with their looting as long as they throw some bones here and there for us.

The freebie nonsense is overrated .Only the grinders and mixies that were given as part of election manifesto were bad.Laptops to school kids was a great initiative. It's like people don't know the difference between welfare schemes and freebies

She is socialist but not that bad. But yeah TN can do much better. She was corrupt during her first reign, she was a good administrator during her second, time to remember her for that. The love that you see from common people is not untrue, there would be individuals who would have been touched by her kindness - politicians have such followers. I have a close family member who had received stupendous kindness from Karuna( chief ministers complaint cell gave his widowed sister a life and family saving job) and he would support him till grave. I have read about a deaf and dumb women flower seller who received a house from JJ and she is a insignificant yet lifelong follower. The people that you see crying quietly are those, i respect their angst these are simple people. G_B_ and diga
BeautifulGame
maybe. though vote share of bjp+ in 2014 wasn't too bad: Aiadmk: 44.3% dmk: 26.8 bjp+ : 18.5 upa: 4.3 Yes because DMK was struggling with infighting and there was alliance with PMK mdmk and dmdk.N ot many of those votes were for BJP as 2016 numbers showed Also remember all of them left BJP in 2016 because they considered BJP liability (all four got decimated anyway) and now DMK despite losing in 2016 emerged pretty strong . PMK and DMDK ready to ally with BJP subject to BJP fighting under their projected CM candidate. BJP refused. Looking at things now, its for the best. In the bypolls conducted BJP got more votes than PMK and DMDK. DMDK is as good as dead. PMK as well, their vote share is concentrated in the north but its going to be hard for them to sustain themselves for the next few years. BJP has no such issues, it has funds and manpower at its disposal. Ramadoss may want to establish his son, but he needs to be realistic.

Maybe you wanna explain why a national party can't do well in TN. or is it just about party's name (BJP doesn't have 'dravid' in its name)?
