ShebbySB Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 These are my World XI squads:- Test:- Warner Root (I'd open with him in place of Cook for 2 reasons, first of all gives an option to pick an extra middle order bat plus it's a left right combo) Willamson (My choice over Amla) Kohli (c) S.Smith AB (Wk) (Obvious choice ahead of Bairstow because of superior batting) Stokes Ashwin Starc Steyn Hazlewood (Picked him over Anderson as he's a steady all condition bowler) Reserves:- Cook,Amla,Herath,Anderson. ODI:- Warner Guptill Kohli (c) Amla AB De cock (Wk) Shakib Stokes Starc Boult Tahir Reserves:- Rohit,S.Smith,Ashwin,Rabada. T20:- Warner Guptill Kohli AB Maxwell Buttler (Wk) Andre Russell Faulkner Starc Tahir Bumrah Reserves:- Gayle,S.Smith,Shakib,Mustafizur. express bowling and Mosher 2
sandeep Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Good thread. Tests Warner Vijay Root Kohli Williamson S Smith ABDV Stokes Ashwin Starc Shami Reserves: Yasir Shah, Herath, Bairstow, Rabada Not picking 2 openers is a cop-out, and Root is a top #3. Vijay is extremely under-rated as an opener, has scored runs all over and is very good against pace and spin. Kohli is doing well as India skipper but I'd go with Williamson or even Smith as the captain before Kohli. Steyn is injured so I'd exclude him. Rabada is a bit of a punt, but I feel the likes of Anderson, Broad etc are aging and fading. ODIs Pretty good team you've gone with. However I'd slot in Amla as opener along with Warner, pushing Guptill to the reserves. I'm excluding injured players otherwise Rohit would edge out Amla (reserve) and Guptill. T20s Guptill doesn't make it to the starting XI for me - I'd slot in QDK in his place and either Buttler or he can don the gloves. Mustafiz would be a starter for me in both ODIs and T20s, but he's injured so out. In T20s, Dwayne Bravo over Faulkner, any day. Faulkner's had his moment in the sun, nowhere near as effective as he once was. Gayle is done, I'd go with one of the young Pommie top order bats as the reserve. Biggest food for thought in this for me, is the fact that apart from Kohli, none of our bats are really in the mix in either ODIs or T20s. Been a while since we had a situation like that. On current form, Rohit has done quite well. Dhoni over the career has been magnifico. Hence, I'd say we have a couple.

Hence, I'd say we have a couple. Rohit is out of commission - rehabbing after major surgery - no guarantee he will go right back to his all-world level production as opener. And btw, he is quite a slow starter - very reminscent of Ganguly in that. And Dhoni, while a sure-fire Hall of Famer with his career as a whole, is nowhere near his best. So yeah, we are currently down to one all-star batsman at the moment in LOI cricket.

I think that he will take a while to gain his groove, but his stronger points will hopefully be retained. But, it is true that at the moment (in the current squad) we lack top-notch batsmen barring one colossus. This is why many people have been likening it to the ODI Tendu era prior to Ganguly and co.

You can include any player still active irrespective of being injured or fit.As a test opener I rate Cook higher than Vijay but Root can do the job so picked him. Edited December 10, 2016 by ShebbySB

I feel Cook is on a Dhoni-like slow decline - his best is behind him. He's still serviceable, but he's going to get worked out by quality pace early and often. Good news for him is that there isn't that much quality pace around. express bowling 1

There's still some - Oz and esp SA have good attacks. Southee is going off the boil, but NZ should be serviceable.

And Cook will struggle against these attacks. He may survive occasionally, but he is a weakness waiting to be exposed at the top of England's order - He's been really good for a long time, no disrespect to his batting. But his fade has begun.

Yes, been getting bowled a lot more often these days.
sandeep Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 @Stumped 5 Englishmen in the "World" test XI - That's more than a bit of a reach :) Although you could make a case for 4 I suppose if you overlook age and injury status for Broad and Anderson. But Cook vs Warner is not close - everybody knows who they'd rather have opening for their team given a choice of one of those two... On the ODI front, I'm surprised that you didn't pick any of the new English bats - I don't rate Guptill that high, he can easily be a reserve instead.
SUMO Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 I wonder how cook has been so succesful with hanging back neither forward nor backward technique to good length (new ball especially) but he is the best overseas batsman in subcontinent for sure ... rate him above kallis, smith, hayden, amla in this regard

sandeep Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 ^ Yeah I guess I see Cook as a shadow of his prime - he's been quite lucky on this tour with a number of dropped catches early on - so his numbers look good. But fair enough, he has done better than Warner historically.
Vijy Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 26 minutes ago, Stumped said: Think all 5 can justify their places, like I said though some of them are conditions dependent. You say everybody knows who they'd rather have opening for their team but I funnily enough I don't actually know which of the 2 you are referring to. I would however call anyone who'd say they'd take Warner over Cook on a turning pitch in Asia in particular a lunatic. You will find such loonies in Oz though.
