Is defensive batting natural?

When we talk of natural game, we always think of wider range of shot making and attacking batting. Defensive batsmen are seen as someone who have suppressed their natural instincts and play the 'safe game' or 'waiting game'.

 

Is this stereotype on defensive batting correct? Are defensive batsmen naturally defensive instead of the assumption of being heavily coached?

For some it is natural - Rahul Dravid, Pujara (to some extent), Haseeb Hamid, Sunil Gavaskar, and many others - they all had a natural play. They can score quick when needed, but had a natural defensive batting.

Gavaskar had a reputation of being a very attacking batsman in domestics before he made his debut.

After all the batsmens job is to score runs, spending a day with 20 runs won't win u games or MOM, perhaps there r some batsmen who have the ability n range to play strokes all across the park as well as length balls, where as some don't have that ability early on n some never can to score of good balls and keep good balls away, so a Tendulkar would give u a glimmer of a chance playing a cover drive of a length ball and the ball might move of the track but a Dravid would use forward defense, one is about knowing your limitations n using your resolve n game to not get out n one is to impose on the bowler n for some play ball per merit

Most of the defensive batsman looks studious type.They may be those who only stick by the coaching manual.

Natural batting shouldnt mean aggressive batting. It means what naturally suits to a batsman. If batsman's natural style is defensive then that is his natural batting and he will look ugly if he tries to bat to quickly like Dravid mostly looked in T20s, ugly, same with Laxman.
